Display Names

Posted by runescape

Members are now able to change their display name to something different from their username. This display name is the name by which other players will see you in all Jagex games and across all website features – from the hiscores to the forums. Your username will always remain the same, regardless of what you change your display name to, as this is what you use to log into the game and website. (NB: Everyone’s initial display name is the same as their username.)

Changing your display name
The ability to change display names is currently only available to members of either RuneScape or FunOrb. To change your display name, visit the Account Management section of RuneScape or FunOrb and select ‘Change your display name’. You can then change your display name to anything that is not currently in use by or ‘held’ for (see next paragraph) another player. (NB: Once you have changed your display name, you will be unable to do so again for 28 days, even to revert back to your previous display name, so make sure you are happy with your new name before confirming the change.)

After these 28 days, you will have a period of time in which you can revert back to your previous display name, should you wish. You will have at least 7 days after the 28 days to revert to your previous display name, as it will be ‘held’ for you and unavailable to anyone else in this time. Depending on how long that name was in your possession before you changed it, you may have more than 7 days to revert to your reserved name.

When you change your display name, an icon will appear next to it on your friends’ Friends Lists. This will inform your friends that you have just changed your name and, by hovering their mouse cursor over that icon, they will see what your previous display name was. It will take a while (up to 15 minutes) for your display name to be updated across the website, so your previous display name may still show on the hiscores or forums for this short time.

Offensive display names
Display names allow us to remove names we deem offensive. Previously, we were only able to ban accounts with offensive names; now, we will simply remove the offensive name from the account. Should this happen, you will receive a temporary display name in the form of a random string of numbers (such as “[#123456789]”), and you will not be able to log into the game until you choose a new name. Players who repeatedly choose offensive names will lose the privilege of being able to change their display name for one year, and will instead be assigned one by a Jagex moderator.

Finally, please be patient with the system at this time, as it will be under a lot of load by many players trying to access it. If you do not get a response, please try again at a later time.

It’s time again for another Achievement Diary, for those players who like to explore what’s available in a specific area. It’s the turn of Ardougne to come under the all-seeing-eye of the diary taskmasters, but we’re not limiting things to just a few tasks here and there this time. A number of them have either come from or been inspired by player suggestions on the forum thread we ran for this not too long ago.

Explore the Ardougne area as you’ve never done before! From the Legends’ Guild to Castle Wars, and from the Combat Training Camp to Yanille, there’s something for everyone. You’ll uncover some fiendishly difficult tasks that will push your skills to their limits, plus a rather ‘sneaky’ reward at the end of your travels. Hopefully, everyone will learn a thing or two along the way too.

So get out those gloves of silence and your teleport runes, and take a walk round Kandarin today.

Back in June, we announced that Jagex has been shortlisted for the Golden Joystick Awards as one of the UK’s top developers. We were really touched to see Jagex recognised in this way by the gaming community and shocked by the fantastic response from our players (who crashed the voting website when we released the newspost). This post is just to say that the poll closes at the end of this week, so if you wish to vote for Jagex and have not yet done so, this is your last chance!

If you don’t know anything about the awards and still want to show your support for Jagex, you can do so by visiting the Golden Joystick website at www.goldenjoystick.com and clicking on the UK Developer of the Year listing on the ‘Vote Now’ page. We also recommend that you un-tick the preference boxes if you don’t wish to be contacted by the organisers or any third parties.

We hope that you all continue to enjoy RuneScape as much as we enjoy making it.

A new challenge awaits worthy adventurers at the Champions’ Guild! It doesn’t matter if you have never seen a champion scroll in your life or have defeated all of them already, there will be something for you. The leprechaun champion is taking on all-comers – there’s no need to find a challenge scroll to fight this little pugilist. Just head on over to the Champions’ Guild and prepare yourself for some ‘no items’ fisticuffs.

Also, three new races have just joined the guild. If you prove yourself to be their enemy, one of them might just drop a scroll challenging you to a duel with their champion, so keep an eye out when battling monsters! Meanwhile, Glophren, the gnome champion of champions, is waiting for the worthiest of adventurers so he can finally issue his challenge. Will you be one of them?

What with the days getting shorter and colder, we thought we’d brighten things up with some new hairstyles! The much requested ‘mullet’ haircut is now available, as well as a few variants on existing styles. The full list is as follows…

Male hairstyles: Dragon variant, Mohawk shaved, Mullet.

Female hairstyles: Asymmetric fringe, Half-up/half-down, Headband, Page boy.

In other news…

Two worlds have been designated ‘Skill Total’ worlds - that’s world 113 (free) and 114 (members). Only players who have a total level of at least 1,000 will be able to log into these worlds. If this proves to be popular, we can always add more worlds.

We’ve created a handful of item packs for some shops, similar to the box of spirit shards. In certain shops, you can now buy the whole stock of eyes of newt, empty or water-filled vials, raw bird meat, and empty baskets or sacks in one go.

A click-delay issue has been fixed in Castle Wars. The game engine has been modified to adjust the behaviour of these clicks back to their previous speed.

An animation has been added for when players are viewing the world map. Other players will see them in-game looking at a map.

A large number of items with parentheses after their names have had spaces added for consistency and easier searching on the Grand Exchange (e.g. “Agility potion(4)” is now “Agility potion (4)”).

An altar has been added to an upper floor in Falador Castle for players to recharge their Prayer points at.

We’ve added a confirmation when casting High Alchemy on items with a Grand Exchange value of 500,000gp or higher. This should prevent the accidental alching of those expensive items.

We’ve also converted the Superheat, Lvl-x Enchant and Plank Make spells to work in a similar fashion to High and Low Level Alchemy spells (i.e. you can now queue up your next cast).

Slayer Masters have now been given a right-click ‘Get-task’ option to speed things up a bit. You can also find out how many more kills you need with a right-click option on enchanted gems, which will even work if you are currently in combat. Finally, gargoyles have a new ‘Smash’ option when they’re near death to allow you to more easily finish them off with a rock hammer.

Drop tables for the TzHaar have been significantly reworked and now drop more TokKul than before. This is to make up for the changes in the TzHaar shop prices earlier this year. The TokKul awarded for defeating TzTok-Jad in the Fight Caves has also been doubled.

The fairy ring network has been given an auto-dial feature. You’ll still need to discover each fairy ring destination to put in your log, but once there they can be simply clicked on to input the code for you.

Yanille has had more points of entry added to it in the form of a new ladder and doorway.

This week’s patch notes are also more extensive than usual. To read the complete list, check out this forum thread.

Future Q&A Sessions

Posted by runescape

We got a lot out of the recent Q&A sessions, so we’ve decided to hold them on a more regular basis. To that end, we’re planning to do the next round of Q&A sessions in January next year, with a further session or two to be held throughout 2010.

As with the previous Q&As, we would open a thread for everyone to ask questions in, collate and then answer those questions a short while later, then hold a live Q&A session on the forums. We also plan to slightly mix up the topics covered for a bit of variety. A detailed schedule for the next session will be published early in the new year.

Also, from next Thursday (22nd October), we will be holding weekly CM-related Q&A sessions, which will be announced and run on the forums, and will cover such topics as Mod recruitment, clans, player-created gameplay, etc. Keep an eye on the Jagex Lite forum for more details.

Send Us Your Specs 2009

Posted by runescape

Back in May 2008, we asked players to send us their computer’s system specifications. The information that we gathered from this proved to be very helpful, so we’d like to repeat the process again this year.

If you’d like to send us your computer’s specs, please visit this link and log in to begin. You will be guided through an agreement page to make sure that you understand what is required, and the process does not take long, so you should be back to RuneScape in no time.

The applet is completely secure and official. We can guarantee that your information will only be used by Jagex to develop future games and improve RuneScape. It will not be shared with any other organisations.

Once you have downloaded and used the program it will tell us the following things about your computer:

* Your operating system
* Your graphics card
* Your CPU
* Your Java version
* Relevant graphical drivers

When we’ve gathered together all of this information, we can begin planning RuneScape improvements and our future projects to work within these specifications. This means that very few people will miss out on any such future updates.

Over the Summer, we ran our biggest competition to date in the form of the RuneScape Machinima Competition. The top prize was a trip to Jagex to come and hang out with us for a few days.

Excl was the winner of that top prize, and so, last week, we had the pleasure of his company. Now he’s back home safe and sound, he’s taken the time to write up a summary of his trip to share with you all, which we’ve published in this blog.

If you haven’t checked out his winning video yet, you can do so now by going to our RuneScape YouTube page and clicking on the playlist titled “Competition Finalists”.

Thanks, Excl, it was awesome having you over. =)

If you’d like to discuss this blog on the forums, please visit this forum thread.

Adventurer’s Log

Posted by runescape

You’ll find that clicking on a player’s forum avatar image will take you to that player’s Adventurer’s Log – a new website feature where you can check all sorts of interesting facts about your character. From current quest progress to recent personal events, you’ll be able to get the latest news on your and other players’ accounts. If you’ve visited Iconis’s Photo Booth, there’ll even be a couple of pictures of your character.

As you play we’ll be generating interesting news about your character’s experiences: high-level NPCs killed, expensive monster drops, and even player kills made on PvP Worlds will be logged. You can also look at other players’ logs (if they’re public) and compare characters. We feel we’ve covered a broad selection of newsworthy events, but would love to hear your ideas for what else you might like to see.

Be advised that every player’s Adventurer’s Log is publicly viewable by default, but you can set your profile to be available to ‘Friends only’, or make it ‘Private’ so only you can see it. Regardless of your Log’s privacy setting, your ‘Time Played’ information will only be visible by you. The Adventurer’s Log can also be accessed via the website’s Community menu, or by clicking here.
We also like to point out that it’s possible for members to directly link to the images of their avatar as taken in the Photo Booth. These are the images displayed both on the forums and in the Adventurer’s Log. The process for doing so is quite straightforward, and is explained here.

We’d like to remind everyone who’s interested in trying out RuneScape Classic, but has not yet logged in since it was re-opened , that the opportunity to do so will only be available for one more week. Only those members that log into Classic (using their normal username and password) before the end of Tuesday 24th November will be able to continue playing it after this date.

You can access RuneScape Classic here.

RuneScape Classic is the predecessor to the current RuneScape game. It was closed to new members over four years ago, but we want for players to be able to try out this important part of our history. We also have potential further plans for Classic (as discussed in this blog), so another reason for this re-opening is to see how many people are interested.

If you have any questions or wish to discuss this, please visit this forum thread.
