Purpose: To get Treasure. It is like another Treasure Trails concept. You get Treasure when you open the Chest underground below Barrows. Barrows is a Burial Site for six Hero’s, whom have been killed off by an Evil Spirit.
Minimum Requirements: Completion of the Priest in Peril Quest.
Warning: Your Prayer drains in increments of 12 when in the Crypt. This happens when you kill an Enemy or go through the Doors of the Catacombs. Bring Prayer Potions in (4) doses and watch your Prayer as you battle the Legendary Brothers.
—Proceed With Precaution—
Mages that have completed Desert Treasure Quest may find the Ancient Spells very effective.
There are several different strategies to kill the six Brothers.
Maging: Maging is one of the most popular ways of taking on the Brothers.
I suggest a decent Magic Level (65+) for using a Mage on the Brothers. Also be sure you have nice Hitpoint and Defense Levels as you will be hit a lot more in the Catacombs due to the low Defense of your Robes.
For lower Levels wear Full Mystic instead of Ahrims (Substitute the Hat for Farseers Helm if possible) and an Elemental Shield if you don’t have a Prayer Book. (If you don’t have 55 Slayer its recommended to use either Fire Bolt with Chaos Gauntlets or other decent hitting Spells that don’t cost a fortune to cast)
For Maging you simply use the correct Protection Prayer to the corresponding Brother and fire away!
Ancient Magicks: I separate this from regular Maging as it requires a completely different strategy. What you will want to bring is the same Equipment as you would for Maging the Brothers except bring Runes for freezing Spells and have the Ancient Staff equipped for auto-casting. What you will want to do is get in one hit and run, the Brother will be stuck in place. Get in about three more hits and run to a safe spot so that when the Brother unfreezes he won’t hit you. Wait about three seconds as they can’t be frozen right away again after unfreezing, then attack them again. Do the same until the Brother is defeated, then move on to the next. (Also a helpful note, on the Ancient Magicks list there is a Canifis Teleport. This makes it much faster to go back and forth from the Bank to the Barrows.)
Melee: This is more commonly used by the higher Levels (110+) as lower Levels will find it hard to hit through the Brothers Defenses. I still find that this takes longer when comparing my technique to the People who do this, but it will give more profit as you’e not using up the Runes that you get out of the Chest.
Recommended Inventory for Melee
Spade (a must, never forget to bring a Spade!)
Prayer Potions (four dose Potions recommended, you can bring more due to the needlessness of a lot of Food)
Teleport (Ectophial recommended)
Food (Lobsters or above recommended, not as much needed as the Armor will provide good protection in the Catacombs)
Again, this is only a strategy for the higher Levels as it would take a lot of time to defeat the Brothers at lower Levels. An Abyssal Whip is recommended for regular Melee for obvious reasons.
Recommended Inventories for Magic
1st:
2nd:
For the 2nd take more Runes of course.
Combination tactic
This Inventory allows you to do the Barrows on 4-6 doses of Prayer Potion without Ancient Magicks and high Prayer (but Level 47+ is still recommended).
This method seems risky, but with 61 Defence, I’e been hit for 20+ ONCE by Guthan and ONCE by Torag.
See “Tactics suggested by Sl4y3rk1ng” for more information of working with this Inventory.
Getting There
Method 1:
Go through the Gate just west of Canifis, head to Mort’ton, go east past the Row Boat, cross the Bridge, and follow the Trails.
Method 2:
If you’e completed the In Search of Myreque Quest, go behind the Bar in Canifis, go down the Trap Door, head to the end of the Tunnel and exit, climb the Bridge and find the Row Boat. Take the Row Boat. Cross the Bridge and follow the Trails.
Entrance:
There will be a large Stone Fenced Area.
There are Hills inside the Stone Fenced Area and within each Hill, is a Crypt. To get into the Crypts, dig at the top of each Hill. There is a Strange Old Man walking around, digging Hills periodically.
There’s a Book inside the House, near the Entrance. “Crumbled Tome” which tells the Story about the Hills and six Fallen Heros.
Once you get into the Crypt, there is a Sarcophagus in the center. A tough Ghost will appear when you search it.
Summoning the Enemies
You must search the Sarcophagus to make the Enemy come out. These Non-Player Characters are really tough.
WARNING! When battling, it has been recorded that the Legendary Brothers have done 55+ damage to Players.
Verac the Defiled (115)
I find that Maging him is most effective. He will go down quickly, just be sure to watch your Prayer Points.
Weapon: Verac’s Flail
Special: Do not fight Verac without Prayer because he will hit you, ignoring your Armor.
Dharok the Wretched (115)
Magic is the best against Dharok, too. You must be extremely careful while fighting him though and always keep your eye on your Prayer Points. Don’t make the mistake of taking off Prayer when his Bars fully red as thats when one hit can make or break your survival. Always take Prayer off after you’e sure hes dead!
Weapon: Dharok’s Greataxe
Special: The lower Dharok’s Hitpoints go, the more his Strength increases.
Ahrim the Blighted (98)
For Ahrim I always pull out my Bow and range him. If ranging him be sure to have Protect from Magic on as he uses the Fire Wave and will hit you hard! Another way to take on Ahrim is to pull out a Dragon Dagger(p), Dragon Dagger+, or a Dragon Dagger(s) and Melee him. The Poison will help take him down faster and due to his Armored Robes he doesn’t have as much Defense as the others. A lot of lower Levels will Poison Ahrim and hide at a safe spot behind the Sarcophagus and leave him to die of Poison. I’e also seen People bring Cannons down into Ahrims Crypt and hide behind his Sarcophagus to let the Cannon kill him.
Weapon: Ahrims Staff (Casts stronger then normal Fire Wave)
Special: Decreases your Attack, Head flying around you
Torag the Corrupted (115)
Another simple Brother. Protect from Melee and Magic will do the trick. Just be sure to keep an eye on your Prayer like always.
Weapon: Torag’s Hammers
Special: Torag reduces your Energy.
Karil the Tainted (98)
I usually pull out my Whip for Karil. Due to his Leather Armor he will take more damage from Melee than the other Brothers in Armor. Magic would still be faster but theres not that much point in wasting Runes on him unless you’e in it for Experience too.
Weapon: Karil’s Crossbow
Special: Karil can reduce your Agility.
Guthan the Infested (115)
This is where, though it may not seem to kill him as fast as it does the others, you use Magic. He will heal every few attacks and if you’e unlucky he will heal two, three, even four times in a row. This is probably where you will use up the most Runes. Again, make sure Guthan is dead before taking Prayer off or leaving as he can get down to the red and sneak in a heal effect thus meaning you have to finish him off (What seems like again).
Weapon: Guthan’s Warspear
Special: Guthan can heal what he hits
The Barrows Prayer Method
With this method you won’t require expensive Armour, weapons, Food and tactics. For the less rich of us Members, and ones with less Experience, this method will probably help you a lot:
What to bring:
The simple idea is that you need to up your Prayer to the max, and not worry about lugging lots of Food and heavy Armour. I have comprised to contrasting suits used to show a lower level, and higher level suit. Both can be varied and adapted like so:
The suits:
The first suit has a nice Magic and Prayer bonus, making it ideal for the Barrows. The second with the Proselyte/Initiate is also similar for Prayer, but due to its lack of Magic bonus, it tends to make you splash and do less damage. Whilst Vestment Robes are great for the job, they are expensive so don’t go out of your way to buy them unless you want to really earn some cash from Barrows.
These can all vary, and these are some alternatives (Prayer is needed more than Defence though):
Helm: Initiate, Farseer, Berserker, Warrior, Helm of Neitiznot.
Torso: Initiate, Robes (Zamorak, Druid, Monk, etc.).
Legs: Initiate, Robes.
Boots: Armoured (Bronze-Rune), White Knight, Climbing.
Gloves: Armoured (Bronze-Barrow), Gauntlets (from Family Crest), White Knight, Klanks Gauntlets.
Ring: Wealth, Life, Recoil, Lunar, Fremmenik.
Amulet: Glory, Fury, Magic, Defence, Strength, Lunar, Holy/Unholy, Salve.
Cape: Skill Cape, Obsidian, God Cape, Legends, Bone Bag.
Quiver: Mithril-Rune, Bolt racks, Bolts.
Weapon: Battle/Mystic Staff, Crozier, Ahrim Staff, Iban Staff, God Staff.
Shield: Elemental, Defender, Kite shield, Square shield.
Inventory:
Both are still varied, and can be broken down, mixed around, and altered. It consist of the Food you’ll need, extra Armour, Potions and other Items to help you on your journey (The Holy Wrench is highly suggested, as it extends your Prayer consumption). Have a look:
Alternatives:
Food: Sharks, Lobsters, Swordfish, Monkfish, Salmon, Trout, etc.
Potions: Two or four Prayer Potions (extras to be safe), Super Sets, Normal Sets.
Ranged gear: Dragonhide (Green-Black), Magic Short Bow, Magic Composite Bow, Seercull Bow, Yew Bow (and below).
Melee gear: Rune Armour (optionally Adamant), Granite Armour, Warrior or Berserker Helmets, Dragon Longsword, Scimitar, or a (++) Dagger, Abyssal Whip.
Teleportation method: Ectophial, Elf Crystal, House Teleports (Tablets).
Now that you know the equipment needed, it’s time to learn about how it works. If you have a Kharyll (Canifis) Portal in your House, use a Teleport to House Tablet, and then use the Portal to travel to Canifis.
The Brothers:
This section goes into detail of how to kill and attack the six Brothers in order of when they should be defeated.
Verac: He is out of the six, the most lethal as your Prayer won’t work 100% on him. To kill him, I suggest you do it at full Prayer, and then you can concentrate on healing, and not constantly checking your Prayer. Get your Spell ready, and use the special move on Excalibur (to boost your Defence). Simply use Magic on him and do not heal unless your Hit Points are low. The reason for being so reckless, is Verac can only do a max of 15 on his attacks. Therefore, you can heal outside his Crypt instead of waste Prayer-drain time inside it. This is also why I break my Food up into different types, Sharks for emergencies, and Lobsters for when I need a boost.
Dharok: Though he is not lethal with Prayer on, he is resiliant. Sometimes he will do a trick where his health hangs on by a small amount, and can trick you into removing your Prayer. DO NOT turn off your Prayer until he lies dead and you are out of the Crypt. Maging him is easy and efficient (takes around ten Slayer Darts for me), and shouldn’t take off much of your Prayer but check it incase.
Guthan: You may think 搘ith piddly robes like those Vestments, he’ll just keep healing? Well I found something very interesting. With my new method, Guthan has NEVER AT ALL healed, and makes himself a very easy target. Maging him is yet again the best, and without his healing, he’s a gonner (your Prayer should run out near here, so be ready).
Karil: A little different from the others, and even though he has a lower Combat Level, his attacks are some of the best. Use your Ranged Protect, draw out your Melee Weapon, drink a Super/Normal Attack Potion and show him what you can do (the DD ++ specials are very effective).
Torag: He’s slow. He’s heavy. He’s inaccurate. He’s no idiot. Don’t try to be a hero in your robes by turning off your Protection Prayers. Yes he’s one of the worst fighters of the Brothers, but if you do it wrong he’ll smash your teeth in. Mage him and move on.
Ahrim: He’s the hardest brother and the only Magic wielder in town. His Spells are pretty accurate, as well as powerful. So prep with your Dragonhide and Bow and shoot him into submission. (Try to take him out last because of his Strength draining special).
The Grand Finale:
This is the bit where your effort pays out. You’ll have to rack up your Kill Count to get some shiny prizes such as increments of 400’s of Mind Runes, 150’s of Death Runes, 250’s of Chaos Runes, or even 100’s of Blood Runes all depending on your Kill Count and what you kill, and also make it to the maze. However one of the Brothers has done a runner, and is content on protecting that large chest with his life (again). So, use process of elimination to figure out who it is. You’ll find their tomb and upon clicking it, it will ask you to enter, or ignore the lower Levels. Kill the remaining Brother THEN enter. If you do it properly, you should get to the centre with minimal problems. Use your Prayer, and run to the center (keep topping it up), until you get there, or you run into the fiesty undead opponent. Kill him in the explained methods, and make your way to the chest.
Your Kill Count may not seem important, but if you can balance your kills each go, you can earn all the required Runes for Slayer Dart. This is why it’s the most usefull Spell to use, as it’s renewable. The Armour you should be carrying in your inventory is now ready for use. Put it on and kill some Monsters and then go to the chest. I recommend using a Ring of Wealth as it seems to help for me, and it’s worth the effort (bring a Ring of Life when you’re trying this out untill you can do it with experience).
And there we have it, my method of Barrows. If you do it as well as me, you can use up 1 Prayer Potion, and about 4 pieces of Food a turn. With the Runes you get you can therefore easily pay for what you’ve used and earn a tidy sum for future endeavours.
Tactics suggested by Sl4y3rk1ng
Having charged Prayer is a MUST!
Dharok: You ALWAYS go to Dharok 1st, if he’s your enemy in the Tunnel, make sure you have two doses of a Prayer Potion left, never in my experience have I needed more then two to kill someone. Always Pray on Dharok unless you are ready to eat 56’s for supper.
Next,
Verac: Next use your leftover Prayer on Verac (he is quite accurate) if your Prayer is low (under 5), switch to Metal Armour, and continue Maging, Verac WILL hit you, but nothing over 20, so just eat (Lobsters and Swordfish work, but Sharks are of course better), if you want to drink Prayer Potions drink ONE dose, and if he isn’t dead yet put Metal Armour on and continue Maging.
Guthan: Put your Metal Armour on and Mage, like I said in my experiences with 61 Defence I’e been hit 20+ from Guthan only once. (With Saradomin Kiteshield, Saradomin Plate, and Dragon Skirt.)
Torag: Do the same as Guthan.
Karil: Karil was weak, but a new unannounced update made him much more accurate with that Bow, so use all the Prayer you need using your Weapon (Abyssal Whip is good or alternatively a Dragon Dagger) I’e been told Range also works… But I’e never tried it. If you use a Dragon Dagger, it would be good for it to be Poisoned, best for it to be Dragon Dagger Super Poisoned.
Ahrim: Look at how much Food you have, if you don’t have much, un-note some at the Mort’ton General Store, (if you have done the Shades of Mort’ton Quest of course) if you have carry on. This ones pretty obvious, take Dragonhide out and range him.
Tunnel:
If Dharok or Karil is your Tunnel make sure you have 2-3 doses of Prayer Potion left. If Verac or Guthan is, try to have one or two, but if you used a lot against Karil its ok. If its Torag or Ahrim, you won’t need any Prayer, but it might be good to have a dose just in case.
When you’e done teleport to Lumbridge or Varrock and charge Prayer again. Varrock is closer but the Altar is a little bit out of the way.
The Catacombs
Kill Counter:
You’ll notice that there’s a Kill Counter in the bottom right corner. You DO NOT have to kill the Ghosts. You can kill other Monsters in the Catacombs (which are easier). It is stated that killing the Ghosts increases your chance for an Equipment drop, (from an indirect source) BUT the drop is NOT guaranteed.
Catacombs:
There are six Hills in total (a Pentagon with a Hill in the center). One of the Hills will be the Entrance to the Catacombs (Lower-Level) Area. This is completely random and you must survey them to see which is the Entrance. There lies a Chest in the center of the Catacombs. The Door leading INTO the Chest Room has a Puzzle to solve (see below). If you solve the Puzzle incorrectly, the Hill with the Entrance to the Catacombs will change and you must search for the Entrance again.
Catacomb Monsters:
Crypt Rats (43)
Bloodworm (52)
Crypt Spider (56)
Giant Crypt Rats (76)
Skeletons (77)
Giant Crypt Spiders (79)
Legendary Brothers that you have not killed when in the Crypts will appear.
Puzzles:
When you go to the Door just before the Room with a Chest, you need to answer a Puzzle to get in.
If you answer the Puzzle incorrectly, you have to solve the Puzzle in a different Room in order to proceed.
Chest:
Once you solve the Puzzle the Door will open. CAUTION: Right before you search the Chest one of the Brothers will spawn. (If you killed all 5 then the 6th one will spawn.) If you search the Chest, you will get a Reward.
EQUIPMENT SETS ARE FOUND HERE IN THE CHEST. The Ground will start shaking and Rocks will start falling on you. The kill counter will disappear. You must exit the Catacombs and Crypt Area to get the Kill Counter back (its also a good idea to avoid the falling Rocks).
All Rewards come from the Chest, which is located under the Sarcophagus. Finding the correct Sarcophagus is random.
Rewards have been compiled from various sources. The new Equipment sets are included. Based on the data, you are?
NOT guaranteed a specific Item. Also, it seems as though you are more likely to get the new Equipment if you kill the six Fallen Brothers. The higher your kill count, the more LIKELY you are to get better Items.

Final Tips:
So now you know some different ways to take on the Barrows Brothers and have a bit more of an understanding of how the Barrows work, but here are some Tips you may find useful.
General Store Trick:
I’m sure we all know about the General Store in Mort’ton. Well, to be able to do more than just a few trips per load some People like to bring noted Food, Prayer Potions and some extra Gold Pieces to sell and buy back Supplies from the General Store. This lets you get many more trips done, but space can become an issue.
Within the Catacombs there are some safe positions where you can Range, Mage or Halberd the Monsters. Use your head and you might find it much easier to get your kill count high without taking too much damage!
If you’e started the Mournings End Part 1 Quest you should have an Elven Teleport Crystal. Teleporting from the Barrows using this before teleporting using the Ectophial will allow you easy access to an Alter to restore your Prayer Points.
A Ring of Life is always a good idea as you never know when you may log out or unexpectedly run out of Prayer.
An Amulet of Glory gives the same Magic bonuses as an Amulet of Magic but also gives some Defense bonuses. If you’e willing to take the risk of losing a Glory it would be more helpful in the Catacombs.
If you happen to be a long way from the Ladder and you want to do another trip without leaving you can use the outmost Tunnels to pass through the Catacombs quicker. Just make sure you don’t get lost!
Always try to fight Ahrim last especially if using Melee as his set effect will lower your Strength.
Jagex removed the ability for Friends being able to block the Brothers for you so don’t try it!
Play on low detail whenever you’e doing Barrows. The Floating Heads can become quite a bother and most times low detail will be less laggy.
Use the best Arrows you can on Ahrim. The faster you kill him the more Prayer you save!
A full Zamorak Book (Unholy Prayer Book) will give +8 Magic Attack and +5 Prayer.
Some jerks will try to cast Teleportother Spells on People trying to do the Barrows, especially at Dharok. Be sure to have Accept Aid off just in case!
The New Players Trick to the Barrows!:
Inventory- Spade, Teleport, Food and Prayer Potions
Equipment- Prayer Robes/Full Initiate, Prayer Book, Climbing Boots (For a bit of a Strength bonus), Dragon Dagger (s)*
*Any Dragon Dagger will do as long as it’s Poisoned, but the higher Level Poison the better!
Strategy (in short) : Go to the Coffin of the Brother your fighting, use the correct Protection Prayer, open Coffin and start fighting him with the Poisoned Dagger until the Brother is Poisoned. Then run behind the opposite side of the Coffin until the Brother is trapped on the other side. Make sure you have something to do like High Alch, talk with Friends, just something to pass the time. The process will take about 8-20 minutes depending on how much damage is dealt. Do the same for each Brother until you get to the Catacombs. Then navigate with the Map above all the way to the Chest. For the last Brother you’ll want to fight him in the Chest Room by Poisoning him and hiding behind the opposite side of the Chest. Just be careful, you may get attacked by another wandering Monster! (Submitted by: darkn1ght125)
A nice little trick while in the Tunnel; Put your Camera completely down as low as it can go by pressing the down arrow key. Once you get into a Room directly north, south, east or west of the Chest Room rotate your Camera until you can see inside the Chest Room. Check each Door that leads to it by just rotating your Camera and determine which Door has the Open Option, take a route to that Door. This will save you from running around wasting your run Energy and Food. (Submitted by: Muzicmainiac)
When you’ve opened the Chest, you’ve got to run out, quite simply just go back the way you came in (so remember how you came in). The Rocks only hit you once every 30 seconds with a maximum hit of five, so they’re not much danger, but the Skeletons can be dangerous with maximum hits of ten. (Submitted by: Gobberhop)
Though it comes with a greater risk of losing more Money if you die, you can bring full Guthans to help you save Food. Although be sure to have at least a bit of Food with you as it’s better to be safe than sorry! (Submitted by: Gobberhop)
When selling/buying back Prayer Potions at the General Store it’s a nice idea to get back 6-8 Prayer Potions, this will allow you to do a few trips (especially with Guthans for healing purposes) and you can drop the Empty Vials as you go along to create space. (Submitted by: Gobberhop)
Karils Bow is a good way to take on Ahrim if you’ve got the Money to spare on the repairs. Since you will usually get Bolt Racks from the Chest you don’t really have to worry about running out of Ammo. (Submitted by: Gobberhop)
Ring of Wealth is said to increase the chances of getting Barrows Items from the Chest. (Though it’s been said, To be confirmed by Jagex?I’d like to check into that myself before confirming it here.) (Submitted by: Gobberhop)
Barrows Items have seemingly gotten rarer (not confirmed by Jagex, I will be looking into this as well.) So don’t get mad if you don’t get anything very often. Barrows is pretty much a Game of luck and patience, enough of both can turn into a nice profit! (Submitted by: Gobberhop)
Even if you don’t get any Barrows Items from the Chest the Runes you gather up more than pays for the Supplies you may use up. If nothing else, try thinking of the Barrows as free Magic/Melee Experience with a chance for large profit
