Introduction

Chopping down a tree One of the simplest ways in which people make a living in RuneScape, is by cutting down trees. The Woodcutting skill can benefit you in many ways, many of which involves using your logs for Firemaking, or members can use them to fletch items.

To chop down a tree, just click on one and select ‘Chop down tree’. If you have a hatchet in your inventory and a sufficient Woodcutting level, you will attempt to chop down the tree. Although Woodcutting is not a members’ skill, some items that can be cut using this skill require member status.

This symbol indicates the location of the rarer trees on your maps.

Tools

Woodcutters need to be familiar with the tools of their trade. In RuneScape there are two types of tools used.

The most common Woodcutting tool is the hatchet. The other tool for this purpose is the machete. Hatchets are used to chop down the different types of trees found throughout RuneScape, whereas machetes are used to hack away at light, medium and dense jungle mainly during the Tai Bwo Wannai Clean-Up.

Note: The better the quality of your Woodcutting hatchet or machete, the quicker you will be able to cut logs from trees, this also applies to the dragon hatchet, which has a faster Woodcutting speed than rune hatchets.

Introduction

Cleaning up the village For those who have completed Jungle Potion there’s still plenty to do around the village - just talk to some of the villagers in this tight little community. By speaking to Murcaily, east of Trufitius’ hut, you will find that most jungle villagers hate to have their nice tidy village invaded by stubborn patches of jungle. Therefore, you volunteer to help clear the area of jungle surrounding the village and also repair any damaged fencing.

Location

Map of Tai Bwo Wannai This game takes place in the jungles surrounding Tai Bwo Wannai Village on Karamja. There are a number of ways to reach the village, many of which are detailed in the Transportation Guide.

Requirements

To take part in this task you must have completed the Jungle Potion quest. You will need to be wielding a machete in order to cut back the growth, not just have one in your inventory. Machetes do not have a required level to wield, but level 10 Woodcutting is required to chop light jungle, level 20 is required to chop medium jungle and level 35 is required to chop dense jungle.

Weapon This item can be obtained from shops, traded with players or from monster drops. Some of the NPCs that attack you while you are on the clean-up can be dangerous if you are not prepared, so it is important that you carry a weapon to defend yourself.

Holding back the Jungle

There are three types of jungle growth: light, medium and dense. When you cut back the jungle you will receive some spars. The type of spar you receive will be the same as the type of jungle you cut back. For example, if you cut back some light jungle, you will receive light spars. The number of spars you receive when cutting back one jungle growth is random, so you could be trimming two different jungle growths of the same type and receive five spars from one and eight from another.

Using Spars

There are different uses for spars. One use is for repairing the fence around Tai Bwo Wannai Village. Repairing the fence may use many spars, so you may need to cut back a lot of jungle. If you have spar in your inventory just left-click on the rotten village fence and you will begin to repair it.

Repairing the fence goes through different stages: partial fence, short fence and medium fence.

When you have completed rebuilding the fence a message will come up on the screen to confirm this. It will also state that you can either rebuild another fence, or reinforce the same fence. You can continually reinforce the fence after it has been rebuilt, so reinforcing one part of the fence once should be adequate.

Enemies

While you are cutting back the jungle you may encounter several NPCs that will attack you. These NPCs drop several new items when defeated, so it’s worth defending yourself.

Fighting mosquitoes will grant a small amount of Agility experience.

Broodoo Victims

The broodoo victims that attack while you are hacking away at the jungle have a Combat level of 60. Each of these victims have a weakness that you can use to your advantage to beat them. So if you are not strong enough to beat them in combat or if you are low on life points you may find that using this weakness against them will help you. Simply select whatever item their weakness is, and use it on the broodoo victim, and they will lose a significant number of life points.

The blue victims are weak against food.

The green victims are weak against anti-poison potion.

The orange victims are weak against relicym’s balm, the anti-disease potion.

Broodoo Shields

The masks that the broodoo victims drop can be used with two snakeskins and eight nails to make a broodoo shield. Broodoo shields require level 35 Crafting in order to be constructed.

Broodoo shields have a special ability when used in combat. If you are fighting an enemy and you have your broodoo shield equipped then it will have a 1 in 10 chance of casting a spell on your enemy.

The shield you use will determine what its effect will be. If you are using a poison shield this will lower your enemy’s Defence. If you are using a disease shield, this will lower your enemy’s Strength stat. If you are using a combat shield, this will lower your enemy’s Attack stat.

Your enemy’s stats will be decreased by 1 point first, then by 5% after that. A few conditions apply; for example, the enemy has to be at close range, they must still have over half of their life points, and their stats must be at base levels for them to be affected.
The number, by the name of the broodoo shield, represents the number of charges left on it. Every time you use the spell, this charge will decrease by one.

Snakeskin Armour

If you defeat one of the bush snakes that attack you while you are cutting back the jungle growth, you will obtain some snake hide. Take this to a tanner to turn it into snakeskin. This snakeskin can be used to make snakeskin armour: boots, vambraces, a bandana, chaps and body. Goutweed Tubers

When you come across goutweed tubers when cutting back the jungle growth, dig it up. These can be grown the same way herbs can, so go to the nearest herb patch and plant it. Once this has fully grown, harvest it and you can trade the grown goutweed to Sanfew in the Taverley herb shop for other herbs. Alternatively, you can sell the goutweed to Gabooty in Tai Bwo Wannai and receive the Karamja currency (trading sticks) in return, or eat them for health and run energy.

Favour

While cutting the jungle back, repairing the fence and fending off village threats, you will receive Tai Bwo Favour. This favour can be exchanged for rewards indigenous to this island.

If you wear tribal outfits, then the villagers will recognise you and give you a larger percentage of your rewards.

Rewards

Redeeming Favour

Once you have a percentage of Favour, visit one of the villagers around Tai Bwo Wannai village and they will thank you for repairing the fence and dealing with the threats to the village by rewarding you with trading sticks. You cannot redeem trading sticks from the same NPC in a row, so use this time to either increase your Favour’s percentage or go to another villager and see if they are more generous. The amount of trading sticks you receive from each NPC may vary. The more percentage of Favours you have, the more trading sticks you will receive from the villagers.

New Food

When the jungle spiders die they drop spider carcasses. These carcasses can provide you with a food supply when your busy cutting down jungle and will save you Fishing for food.

To make an edible meal from the spider carcass, you first need to make a skewer. To make a skewer use a machete with a spar or arrowshaft, any variety will do. You will then have a number of skewers in your inventory. Use the skewer with the spider carcass and roast it on a fire. This will produce a spider on a stick, a nice tasty meal for hard workers on the go. For information about the cooking level required when making the spiders on sticks, please see the Cooking Guide.

Tree Enclosure

Also in Tai Bwo Wannai Village is a special tree enclosure, to the right of Trufitius’ hut. In this enclosure you will find mahogany and teak trees.

To enter this enclosure you will have to pay 100 trading sticks. Once inside, you can cut down the trees with a normal Woodcutting hatchet. For information about the Woodcutting level required when cutting these new trees, please see the Woodcutting Guide.

New Clothes

After gaining your trading sticks from the villagers, you can now buy from the General Store to the north-west of Karamja. By right-clicking on Gabooty (wandering around the center of the village) you can buy items from his Cooperative. Some of the items shown on the shop menu aren’t for sale, they are there so that players can sell their items to the shore in exchange for trading sticks. In Gabooty’s Tai Bwo Wannai Cooperative, you can buy various items including new clothes.

Gnome Drinks

Also available on Gabooty’s right-click menu is the option to sell gnome cocktails in exchange for trading sticks. If the cocktails are in stock, you can use your earned trading sticks and buy some. For information on the effects of each cocktail see the Cooking Guide.

Tai Bwo Wannai Parcel Service

This service allows players to send items from their inventory to their banks, at a cost of 10 trading sticks per item.

Introduction

For those who hope to make it as a master woodcutter, the various locations of the more valuable wood become extremely important. Familiarising oneself with these places is vital when it comes to being able to supply wood to an established customer base, or when attempting to swiftly advance in this skill.

Some areas are more heavily used than others, so you will need to find which locations are best for you at your present skill level and stock requirements.

Summoning Familiars

Using the Summoning skill, you’ll find that there are a few familiars that might be useful for training your Woodcutting. Of particular note is the beaver, who boosts your Woodcutting level.

Lumberjack Clothes

While escorting adventurers from Paterdomus to Burgh de Rott, or refugees from Burgh de Rott to Paterdomus in Temple Trekking / Burgh de Rott Ramble, you may find some lumberjack clothes dropped by the dire undead lumberjacks of Mort Myre. You will need a Woodcutting level of 44 to wear lumberjack clothes.

Each of these items of clothing provides a slight experience boost when Woodcutting, with an extra bonus for wearing all of them together. Note that lumberjack clothes are untradeable.

Bird’s Nests

While cutting down trees, you may come across a bird’s nest. If you pick up the nest and search it (in your inventory) you may find a piece of jewellery or other useful items inside.

It is possible to increase your chance of receiving bird’s nests by wearing a rabbit-foot necklace. These items can be acquired by hunting a rabbit (see the Hunter - Rabbit Snaring page for more information) to receive a rabbit foot, and then stringing it with a ball of wool (requiring a Crafting level of 37) to make the rabbit-foot necklace.

Tai Bwo Wannai Clean-Up

The Tai Bwo Wannai Clean-Up will teach you that you can do other tasks with the Woodcutting skill. By using machetes to remove the light, medium and dense jungle you learn a new way to increase your Woodcutting skill.

Also, the trading sticks you earn from the villagers of Tai Bwo Wannai can be used to purchase access to a special tree enclosure where you will find mahogany and teak trees to chop down using normal hatchets.

Teak and Mahogany Special Logs

There is a small chance that, while you are woodcutting at a teak or mahogany tree, you will receive a ’special log’. These logs have patterns ingrained into them, and are considered valuable by the Sawmill Operator of Varrock.

If you are lucky enough to get your hands on a patterned special log, you have one of two options. You can:
Sell them to the Sawmill Operator, north-east of Varrock
Exchange two special logs for a completely free conversion of all logs in your inventory into planks

Arctic Pine

The arctic pine spots north of Neitiznot are a useful area to gain not one, but two batches of Woodcutting experience for each log you cut. Once you have cut some arctic pine logs, take them to the stumps littered around the area and split them for a second lot of XP.

Deposit points are located at the end of most bridges north of Neitiznot for quickly disposing of your split wood.

Canoes

With your Woodcutting skill, you can make canoes to travel up and down the River Lum.

The type of canoe you can build is based upon your Woodcutting level:

Sawmill Jobs

Location of the Sawmill Operator The Sawmill is open for work experience to woodcutters of level 80 or above: as the overseer puts it, “You do the work, you get the experience”. Enter through the right-hand door at the front of the sawmill and you will meet the overseer, who has a complete absence of workers and plenty of orders to fulfill.

The overseer will direct you to the noticeboard, where you can choose from quick jobs and large jobs. As these imply, the large jobs will take a greater amount of time to complete but with a more impressive Woodcutting xp reward, while the quick jobs take a fraction of the time for a fraction of the xp. Once you have accepted a job by clicking the ‘Accept’ button, you are ready to start completing the order.

Your first task is to fill your inventory with logs from the stacks of logs to the north-west of the room. These are free to be used in the Sawmill but cannot be taken outside. You then take these logs to the conveyor belt hopper to the east, where they roll out on to the conveyor belt and get split by a spinning blade, falling into the plank stack at the end. As with the logs, these cannot be taken out of the Sawmill.

Fill your inventory with these planks, as they need to be converted into cut planks for your order. If you want to know how many cut planks of each specific type that you need, check the table in the top-left of your game screen. To cut your planks, click on the workbenches to the south of the room with a saw in your inventory. You may get a saw for free from the first room that you entered, or you can use a crystal saw to cut the planks slightly faster. Once you have clicked on the workbench, a small screen will open, offering four different types of cut:

You will gain a small amount of experience for each completed plank, but the greater chunk of xp is saved for a finished order. You can tell if your order is finished by looking at the top-left of your game screen. Completed orders can then by given to the overseer by right-clicking on her and selecting ‘Finish job’.

Any excess cut logs can be regained from the wagon on the south side of the room, so you have a headstart on whatever order you choose to take on next!

Locators

To get to your Woodcutting areas quicker, you might want to consider purchasing a locator. These can be bought using reward credits in Mobilising Armies. Each officer of the officer tower can offer you a different level of locator.

By using the locator, you can choose to be teleported to a Mining, Woodcutting, Fishing or Herblore secondary ingredient area. Once you have made your choice, the locator will make some mysterious calculations and then teleport you randomly to a suitable spot. Try not to be wasteful: the locators have a limited number of charges and can only be refreshed by buying another or playing a game of Mobilising Armies.

Juju Woodcutting Potion

By practising your herblore in the Herblore Habitat, you might be able to make yourself a juju woodcutting potion. This concoction, when drunk, gives you a one in ten chance of finding a wood spirit with each swing of the hatchet. This spirit will automatically carry any logs straight to your bank. There is also a small chance that these logs will be of a higher level than the logs you would have received. Each dose lasts for 5 minutes.

Training Hints and Tips

Use the best hatchet that you can.

Try to find a good Woodcutting location close to a bank, to save travelling time.

Woodcutting Training in Dungeoneering

It is possible to train all of your skills while dungeoneering, and Woodcutting is no exception. Trees grow through the walls of Daemonheim, and can be cut down using a hatchet. You can also gain Woodcutting experience by completing woodcutting skill doors.

Quests Giving Woodcutting Experience

Although Woodcutting is not a members’ skill, some of the objects that need to be cut down are members’ objects. There are no quests required to use this skill, but to hack away at the light, medium and dense jungle growing in Tai Bwo Wannai Village you need to have permission from the villagers in the Tai Bwo Wannai Cleanup and have completed Jungle Potion.

Dwarven Army Axe

The Dwarven Army Axe is a tool of many uses and one of those uses is Woodcutting. You can use your Dwarven Army Axe to cut down any tree that your Woodcutting skill allows you to. Not only this, but it gives you a chance of getting extra Woodcutting XP and a chance to produce a knot in addition to the log that you cut. The knot is a non-stacking, non-tradable item used in Crafting. Note that knots can only be cut from regular trees.

As well as its Woodcutting uses, the Dwarven Army Axe can also be used in Combat, as a pickaxe when Mining and as a chisel when Crafting. It can also be used as a tinderbox and a needle.

General

Can a blackjack be used against other players in the Clan Wars minigame or on PvP/Bounty worlds?

The blackjack can be used against other players, but you will not have the option to knock an opponent out. When using the blackjack in combat you will randomly daze your opponents for a short period of time.

After stealing from a stall, how long do you have to wait before you can speak to the owner again?

You have to wait ten minutes before the trader will talk to you after stealing from the stall.

I have heard that there are chests that give nature runes as a reward once searched. I can’t find them, where are they?

You can find one of these chests near the east entrance to Ardougne just before the marketplace. Try looking in the building to the south of the path.

You can find another of these chests on the second floor of the house just north of Ardougne church. You will need a Thieving level of 28 to successfully steal from these chests.

Always remember to search for traps first!

How do I start Thieving?

Pickpocket men and women. There are plenty in Lumbridge, Varrock, Falador and other cities and towns.

Am I less likely to be caught Thieving if I wear special equipment and stand behind my victim?

Generally, Thieving is only affected by your Thieving level. In the HAM area, though, you are less likely to be caught Thieving if you dress as a HAM cultist.

You can also use the Hunter skill to get gloves of silence, which greatly increase the chance of pickpocketing successfully.

The Thieves’ Guild

Location of the Thieves’ Guild The Thieves’ Guild is established and developed during the Buyers and Cellars quest.

There are no requirements to enter the guild cellar or to start the quest, but you will need level 5 Thieving to take on Darren’s first caper and establish the burgeoning Guild. The subsequent capers you can perform for the guild have further pre-requisites, which can be seen here.

The Guild offers a wide range of services, which become available as its facilities are expanded. These include training in the many and varied schools of skulduggery, a store which stocks useful rogues’ tools (untraceable, naturally) and a helpfully discrete bank.

Pyramid Plunder

Deep in the southern reaches of the Kharidian Desert is the city of Sophanem, home to a pair of magnificent pyramids. The pyramid of Jalsavrah has recently been opened to the Thieving public for them to test their mettle against the traps and dangers set in place by the pyramid’s guardian mummy.

Osman, spymaster and thief, has Thieving experience to impart to those who can get him some tasty sq’irks. Juicy, particularly if ripe, these sq’irks can only be obtained from the garden of the Sorceress who lives south-east of Al-Kharid.

Blackjacks – Lure and Knockout

During The Feud, adventurers can learn a new method of Thieving - a method whereby they will take minimal damage and not get caught. You can get your hands on a blackjack during Rogue Trader (by buying one from the trader near the kebab shop) or from Dodgy Derek’s shop in the Thieves’ Guild once you have completed the Lost Her Marbles caper (after completing the Buyers and Cellars quest.

Right-clicking with a blackjack wielded gives the option ‘Lure’. If you lure your target away from prying eyes, you should then go ahead and ‘Knock out’ the target, leaving a safe pickpocket with no chance of taking damage. Please remember, there is always a chance of failing to knock your target out.

Thieving from the people shown in the table below does not require a blackjack, but if you lure them and successfully knock them out, your pickpocketing success will be guaranteed. You will not be able to knock someone out if you do not have the Thieving level required to pickpocket them. Successfully knocking someone out will give the Thieving experience shown below:

H.A.M Dungeon

The H.A.M dungeon is located north-west of Lumbridge, and is a perfect area for thieves to train their art. To get in, find the trapdoor in the damaged house, marked by an exclamation mark on the minimap.

Right-click on the trapdoor and select ‘Pick lock’. If you fail to pick the lock, simply try again, and eventually it will open. Picking the lock earns 3.8 Thieving experience and access to the caves.

Climbing down the ladder leads to the H.A.M area. Here you can talk and learn more about H.A.M, or get on with Thieving. Pickpocketing the members may get you a variety of loot, even clues for Treasure Trails. If you are unsuccessful, you may be hit as usual, but there are other punishments that you may receive. You maybe bundled out of the area and wake up in the woods outside Lumbridge or put into the H.A.M jail.

If you are bundled out of the camp and wake up outside, simply find your bearing using the minimap and head back to the trapdoor, pick the lock and enter the caves again to continue.

If you are put in jail, use your Thieving knowledge to pick the lock on the jail door, and if successful walk out into the area and continue (picking the jail door will also provide 3.8 Thieving experience).

It is worth noting that if you are wearing a full set of H.A.M robes, your chances of blending in and Thieving successfully will increase.

Rogues’ Den

When your Thieving and Agility reach 50, you may want to try the Rogues’ Den. The Den is located below the pub in Burthorpe, where you will find yourself able to buy certain items to help you with the den.

This maze occupies a fiendish space more than five times the size of Lumbridge and has more than 440 devilish traps, it is not for the faint hearted! However, the further you get through, the more experience in both Agility and Thieving you can receive!

If the maze isn’t your thing, you can still train your Thieving in the starting area by trying to crack the safes.

Buying a stethoscope for 10 coins from Martin Thwait will increase your chance of successfully cracking the safe (which will earn you 70 experience).

If you are successful in looting the safes, you can obtain coins or gems.

Failure to crack the safe will trigger a trap, and you will take damage.

Dairy Cows

While similar to pickpocketing, stealing bells from dairy cows may prove an amusing diversion for those who have reached a certain point in Cold War, provided you have level 15 Thieving. To procure a cow bell for yourself, simply right-click on a dairy cow and select ‘Steal-cowbell’. Unless your clumsiness alerts these docile animals, you will be rewarded with 16 Thieving experience and a bell that you can play while cunningly disguised as a penguin. Naturally.

If your frenzied fumbling wakens the cow from its usual grass- and cud-chewing, though, you’ll receive a swift kick to the shins, simultaneously suffering a suitable injury to your pride for trying to steal from a cow.

Summoning Familiars

Using the Summoning skill, you’ll find that there are a few familiars that might be useful for training your Thieving. Of particular note is the magpie, whose special move will boost your Thieving level.

‘Minor’ Helpers

Bandit’s Brew will help, as drinking it temporarily increases your Thieving level by one. The drink can be bought from the bandits in the Bandit Camp for 650gp.

Gloves of silence, made by the fancy-dress store owner in Varrock - if you have two lots of black kebbit fur and 600gp - will increase the chance of success when pickpocketing. A warning however - the gloves will eventually wear out if you are caught pick-pocketing too often!

Gloves of silence are damaged when you are caught pickpocketing, but they can be repaired. To check the state of your gloves, right-click on them and select ‘Inspect’. If you’d like to fix them up a bit, use some more dark kebbit fur on them while you have a needle, thread and a knife in your inventory. This will restore them fully, although you must have a Crafting level of 64 to repair gloves of silence.

Agility Skill Bonuses

It is possible to receive two, three or even four times the usual loot from any successful pickpocketing attempt, depending on your Agility and Thieving levels. You will not receive any additional Thieving experience for receiving multiple loot.

The following levels are the exact levels required to receive multiple loot; unlike Runecrafting sloping, you do not gain a ‘chance’ of receiving a x2 multiplier if you are close to achieving the Agility or Thieving requirement. The following are only examples of the level requirements - all pickpocketable targets can be used to gain multiple loot:

Advanced Pickpocketing

There’s always more gold to be fleeced from a hapless rube, and experienced thieves have an uncanny knack for finding it.

Completion of the Lost Her Marbles caper, after completing the Buyers and Cellars quest, will improve your chances of pickpocketing better loot from certain marks; those requiring 40 Thieving or less to steal from. It won’t let you steal anything new, of course, but your chances of receiving the best loot available from your target will increase.

Training Hints and Tips

When pickpocketing NPCs, try to lure and trap them in a room to limit their wandering.

Find a quiet world so that there are no other players trying to kill the NPC that you are trying to steal from!

Thieving Training in Dungeoneering

It is possible to train all of your skills while dungeoneering, and Thieving is no exception. Treasure chests can be found in bonus rooms, and you can also gain Thieving experience by completing thieving skill doors.

Introduction

Stealing sq’irks Osman, spymaster of Al Kharid, finds skulking and skullduggery thirsty work. Over the years he has managed to quench it with sq’irk juice - a delicious drink made from the fruits of the Sorceress’s Garden - but he and the Sorceress are no longer on speaking terms. The craving for sq’irk is near unbearable, so Osman takes a desperate course: asking you for help!

Finding ripe sq’irk for juicing will involve sweet-talking your way into Sorceress’s Garden and stealthily creeping past the gardeners to get to the sq’irk trees.

Location

Garden location To start this task, you need to locate Osman near the Palace. He should be walking about in front and will talk about sq’irks when asked. He will direct you to the south-east of Al Kharid where the Sorceress resides. Once here, you will find the Apprentice downstairs and the rather unpleasant Sorceress upstairs. You will get nothing from the Sorceress - it is best to talk to the Apprentice.

Whiny and hard-done-by, the Apprentice knows some secrets of the Sorceress’s compression magic - enough to send you to the garden where the sq’irks grow. She will send you there if you are polite enough and sympathetic enough to listen to her whining.

Once there, in the fountain area of the garden, Del-Monty will offer advice to those who are wise enough to bring an amulet of catspeak or cramulet.

Requirements

You must have completed the Prince Ali Rescue quest to play this task.

Aside from this, you will need an empty beer glass and a pestle and mortar. Osman will not take the sq’irks on their own, so these two items will become invaluable when squeezing the delicious sq’irk juice.

It should be noted that you cannot bring a cat or familiars to the garden, so it’s best to leave your kitty and Summoning pouches safely in the bank.

Finally, there are four different gardens in the Sorceress’s Garden, each magically set to replicate spring, summer, autumn and winter. Each of these gardens require a Thieving level to pick the lock and enter, according to the ripeness of the fruit they contain:

Recommended Items

The gardens require forward planning, sharp reflexes and persistence - three things that no item on RuneScape can give you. It is wise to keep your inventory stocked with empty beer glasses for the sq’irk juice and a pestle and mortar.

It may be worth taking an amulet of catspeak or cramulet with catspeak amulet included, if you have them, as Del-Monty the cat will impart some valuable information about the gardens when asked.

Stealing Sq’irks

Map of the Garden Once inside the fountain area, you have a choice of four separate gardens, all attuned magically to the separate seasons. To get through the gate to each of the gardens requires a Thieving level, as mentioned in the previous table.

Once inside your choice of garden, you must try and find your way to the sq’irk tree. This requires walking through the maze of hedges without being spotted by the various elementals that patrol it. Running straight for the tree will not work - you will soon be spotted and teleported to the fountain area.

You will have to time your runs in short bursts, stopping at various alcoves and dead-ends to plan your next move. You will soon find your favourite paths through the gardens and have a clutch of sq’irks in your hands!

Once you have finished in Sorceress’s Garden, simply drink from the fountain to teleport yourself back to Al Kharid!

Rewards

The sq’irks of Sorceress’s Garden come in four forms, each at various stages of ripening. Those taken from the winter garden will be unripened; spring garden sq’irks will be slightly under-ripe; autumn sq’irks are slightly over-ripe; and summer sq’irks are just right.

On their own, however, the sq’irks are not useful. The skin is hard and not particularly tasty, so eating them is not an option. Instead, pulping them with a pestle and mortar makes for a delicious drink - as long as you have an empty beer glass in your inventory and the correct number of sq’irks per drink.

Once you have a glass of sq’irk juice, you can choose to hand it to Osman for Thieving experience, or to keep it for yourself as a means to boost your Thieving stats and run energy.

Osman will take all sq’irk juices in your inventory if you offer them to him, not one at a time. Such an impatient man!

Also in each of the gardens are the Sorceress’s personal herb gardens. These small areas will often be down a different route from the sq’irk tree, but may well be a more attractive prospect. If you choose to travel to the herb patch then you can pick two random herbs before you are teleported back out to the fountain. Unfortunately, these areas are for the Sorceress only, not for your Farming needs; it wouldn’t be the most sensible place to farm anyway!

Introduction

Keep your Summoning points up! If your points run out, you’ll be unable to summon your familiars, so if you plan on spending a fair bit of time with your familiar, you should head to an obelisk first to recharge, as well as grabbing some Summoning potions.

Skill-based familiars (like the macaw) can help out with a few skills at once, so you can be working on your Herblore, for example, while getting Summoning experience.

Keep an eye on your familiar’s timer! They might just disappear right when you need them the most…

Consider unlocking the Spiritualise Food spell for your lunar spellbook. This spell allows you to heal your familiar with food, as well as boost its combat stats and regenerate its timer.

Trading Pouches and Scrolls for Shards

Bogrog, the ogre who manages the Gu’Tanoth Summoning obelisk, is eager to get his massive hands on as many Summoning pouches and scrolls as possible for reasons known only to himself, and to this end is willing to pay summoners for their efforts with spirit shards.

Bogrog will give you 70% of the shards required for a pouch, and a few less for scrolls, provided you have proven yourself worthy of this reimbursement. You need at least level 20 Summoning to trade in pouches and scrolls. In addition to this, you usually need a higher level to trade in a pouch or scroll.

This is a sliding scale; the table below shows a few examples to give you an idea of the level required to trade in pouches and scrolls. If you want to know the exact level required, Bogrog will tell you if you click the “Value” option on your pouch or scroll.

Familiarisation

The druids of Taverley are one of the main sources of spirit shards for sale in RuneScape, but have you ever wondered where all those shards actually come from? Well, the recent upsurge in new summoners means the druids are in need of a little help in gathering this much sought after resource, so are willing to share their secrets and teach you the art of familiarisation. Once per week, you’ll have the mental fortitude to project your consciousness into the spirit realm itself to gather the raw materials the druids require to make spirit shards. The rewards for helping them will allow you to gain charms faster or earn you some ingredients for infusing summoning pouches with.

Charm Sprites

If you’d like to get hold of charms without engaging in combat, then you might be interested in hunting charm sprites. These little critters can be found south of the Tree Gnome Stronhold, on the way to the Arandar Pass. Hunters of at least level 72 will be able to buy the necessary tools from the gnome hunter Yaktwee, then use them to blast critters and transmute them into charms.

The Ex-ex-parrot

Those summoners who have completed the dastardly Rocking Out will have the option to speak to 50-Ships Mufassah about some other, erm, ‘duties’. Doing so, of course, will earn you the ‘right’ to carry about a very dead parrot - of course, in RuneScape, nothing piratical is quite so simple…

As you’ll face a terrible and violent fate if its true owner discovers that the parrot is now an ex-parrot (don’t worry: no one is going to try to convince you that it’s just sleeping), you will need to revive it… sort of. To convert the ex-parrot into an ex-ex-parrot, you will need some special equipment, which you can use with the ex-parrot. Using the ex-parrot-in-magical-cage on an evil and mysterious black rock will restore it to life or, erm, something like life.

Having revived the ex-parrot, you are now the proud owner of a brand new ex-ex-parrot (if such a thing could ever really be called new). Like all Summoning pets, you will need to feed it, but, unlike other Summoning pets, it will not eat food. Instead, you can simply use it on the black rock to feed it the evil and unnatural energies there.

The ex-ex-parrot has no growth stages, but only becomes hungry very slowly.

Spirit Cape

If you have a Defence level of 50, a Summoning level of 50 and a Dungeoneering level of 50, you may be able to purchase a spirit cape from the Rewards Trader of Daemonheim. While the cape is worn, the special attack cost for combat summoning familiars is reduced by 20% (this does not include the special moves that are activated by using scrolls). The cape also gives a small boost to your base defensive stats:

Introduction

As with other skills, Summoning has a number of items which are incredibly useful to help you train. Some of these store other items and generally look fabulous, while others are items you can find around the world to create pouches or feed your pets.
Pouches
Summoning pouches are an essential for summoners. Without them, you would be unable to summon even the smallest spirit wolf, let alone a mighty wolpertinger.
Pouches can be purchased from a Summoning shop.

Spirit Shards
Spirit shards are curious artefacts that are used to hold the essence of a familiar in the RuneScape world. Without them, no Summoning would be possible.
Spirit shards can be purchased from a Summoning shop. It is possible to purchase spirit shard packs, containing 5,000 shards.

Charms
Charms are odd trinkets that are used to define the types of familiar that can be infused into a Summoning pouch. If you consider the fact that you are infusing a spirit from another realm into a pouch, the danger of Summoning without a charm is obvious…
Charms are available as drops from some monsters; read the Summoning FAQ for tips.

Headgear

As you spend time wandering the world with your familiars, you will discover the convenience of being able to spontaneously unleash your familiars’ scroll abilities. Each item of headgear can store a number of combat-based scrolls, which will be automatically activated when you are in combat. Note that you cannot store non-combat scrolls in headgear.

Antlers and lizards skulls are stocked at Summoning shops, while the feather headdresses can be crafted from feathers and a coif.

To charge headgear, simply use the scrolls you want to store on it. The headgear will glow blue to show that it is charged. You can remove the scrolls at any time by right-clicking on it and selecting ‘Uncharge’. To check how many charges are remaining, right-click the headgear and select ‘Commune’.

A set of antlers can store up to 40 scrolls, a lizard skull can store up to 65 and a feather headdress can hold up to 150.

Custom Headgear

Many summoners find it useful to have more combat-oriented items of headgear devised, so Pikkupstix has established a small business converting a number of helms into Summoning headgear. Helmets converted into Summoning headgear are untradeable, but Pikkupstix is more than happy to convert this headgear back into its ‘normal’ state. The following helms can be converted to store scrolls:

You must have completed the Wolf Whistle quest to begin using the Summoning skill. You can begin this quest by speaking to Pikkupstix in Taverley.

For many centuries now, the druids of Taverley and some of the ogre shamans of Gu’Tanoth have been bringing various familiars from other realms to help them with a variety of their tasks. Of course, the druids being peaceful and the ogres being more ‘business-like’, they traditionally summon entirely different familiars - what would a druid want with a rune minotaur, for example? What would an ogre do with a unicorn stallion?

Having realised how useful this skill is to the adventurers of RuneScape, they have released the secret of their powers, and now you can enjoy the curious advantages that come with learning the art of Summoning.

Summoning works by ‘infusing’ the essence of a creature from a strange realm into a type of pouch. When the Summoning pouch is opened, a portal is briefly activated to pull the familiar through to the world of RuneScape, where it is bound to serve its master for a period of time before the portal closes and it is pulled back.

Summoning is a three-stage skill. That is, there are three distinct aspects to Summoning and using familiars. These stages are as follows:
Infusing pouches
Using special ingredients and the charged Summoning obelisks, you can create Summoning pouches which contain a familiar’s essence.

Summoning familiars
Opening the pouch summons the familiar to follow you about and help you as you travel across RuneScape.

Using Summoning scrolls
Pouches can be ‘transformed’ into Summoning scrolls. All familiars have a special ability that can only be used if you have the correct scrolls.

Infusing Pouches

To infuse any pouch, you need an empty pouch and a few ingredients. You can see what ingredients you need by reading Summoning - Pouches. By taking these to a fully-charged Summoning obelisk, you will be able to infuse the pouch so that you can summon your familiar. To find out where a suitable obelisk is, read Summoning - Locations.

Obelisk interface When you find an obelisk, you can simply click on it to bring up the options for infusing a pouch. Depending on the ingredients you have to hand, it should look something like this:

You can remind yourself of the ingredients you need by moving your mouse over a pouch in the interface. Like many other skills, you can right-click on a pouch to bring up options for infusing many pouches at once. You can also get a written list of ingredients by right-clicking on the pouch and selecting ‘List’.

Beside the pouch/scroll tabs is a filter button, so you can choose to see either all possible pouches (with those you’re currently able to create highlighted) or only those you’re currently able to create.

Summoning Familiars

To summon a familiar for which you have a pouch, simply right-click on the pouch and select ‘Summon’. You will see your familiar appear next to you. Note that you can only have one follower (either a pet or a familiar) out at any one time; there are also a very small number of areas that will not allow you to summon a familiar, usually only if you are standing very near a fully-charged obelisk.

When you summon a familiar, you will notice that your Summoning level begins to fall. Like Prayer, Summoning a familiar will drain your Summoning points, which can only be regained by visiting a Summoning obelisk or drinking a Summoning potion. You can see how many points you have remaining by looking at the Summoning icon next to your minimap.

To keep track of your familiar or to use its special move (by using a Summoning scroll), right-click the Summoning icon next to the minimap. This will bring up a range of options to choose from. The first option will always be to use the familiar’s special move so that you can activate them with a single click, and is followed by:

‘Dismiss now’ is identical in function to the dismiss button in the Summoning interface, but will dismiss them without supplying you with a confirmation panel.

Summoning interface The Summoning interface can be opened by selecting ‘Follower details’ and shows you a number of useful pieces of information, all of which you should keep in mind to get the most out of your familiars.

The bar at the top of the interface is the Special Move bar, which shows how much energy you have for using scrolls to make your familiar use its special move. This will recharge over time. Special moves and scrolls are explained more fully below.

Just below the special move bar is the button which activates your familiar’s special move, provided you have the correct scroll in your inventory or in a charged headdress. If you hover your mouse over this icon, you will see a display explaining what the special move does and how much of your special move bar it will use. Opposite this button is another that can be used to order the familiar to attack a specific target.

Below the image of your familiar are icons showing you your current Summoning points remaining (49/50 in this image) and how long your familiar can remain with you in minutes.

Because Summoning familiars costs you Summoning points, you will often find that you need to recharge. You can do this by heading to any Summoning obelisk, right-clicking on it and selecting ‘Renew-Points’, or by drinking a Summoning potion. Summoning potions also restore a portion of your special move bar.

At the bottom of the interface is an arrangement of buttons.

Call Familiar
Some familiars can be left to perform actions, or end up trapped on the far side of a rock or a tree. To call your familiar back to you, simply click this button and they will reappear at your side. If you are fighting in a multicombat area, this button will also make your familiar attack your enemy.

Renew Familiar
For your convenience, this button can be used to completely renew your familiar’s timer when it is running low. In order to do so, you must have another pouch of the same type in your inventory.

Take Beast of Burden items
If you have a beast of burden or a forager out, you can click this button to transfer any items they are carrying to your own inventory. If they have too many items for you to carry, they will give you as many as you can carry.

Dismiss Familiar
If you no longer need your familiar around, you can click this button to send them back to their strange realm.

The length of time a familiar will remain with you depends on the familiar you have summoned. All familiars will stay with you for a set period of time. There is an initial Summoning points cost to summon a familiar, though, so you must have enough Summoning points to support this. It’s easy to top-up your points, though: just have a look for a small obelisk.

When you have your familiar out, you’ll discover that many of them have a number of special abilities that you can use to your advantage. Talking to your familiar

‘Quardle ardle wardle doodle,’ the magpie said. As your Summoning level increases, you’ll notice that you can understand what your familiars are saying. This is a natural ability you will learn as you become more experienced. To understand your familiars, you need a Summoning level 10 points higher than you do to summon it - for example, to understand a magpie, which requires a Summoning level of 47 to summon, you will need a Summoning level of 57.

Obviously, you can never understand a familiar with a Summoning level of 91, as you will not be able to boost your level above 100 (and only to 100 if you have the Summoning skillcape). In addition, abyssal creatures are strange, unnatural beasts, and will only speak in what seems to be gibberish.

Summoning Scrolls and Special Moves

All familiars have a ’special move’ that can be activated by using a Summoning scroll. There are many different special moves, to see what your familiar does, please read Summoning - Scrolls.

Scroll creation interface To make Summoning scrolls, simply go to a fully-charged obelisk with some pouches of the type of familiar you want to make scrolls for. Click on the obelisk to bring up the pouch interface, then click on the ‘Scrolls’ tab at the top of the menu. You should then see an interface something like this:

If you have a pouch in your inventory, the relevant scroll will be highlighted. To create a scroll, simply click on the image to ‘transform’ a pouch into ten scrolls. You can transform several pouches at once by right-clicking and selecting ‘1′, ‘5′, ‘10′, ‘X’ or ‘All’.

Beside the pouch/scroll tabs is a filter button, so you can choose to see either all possible scrolls (with those you’re currently able to create highlighted) or only those you’re currently able to create.

Using special moves will use up some of your special move energy, which you can see at the top of the Summoning interface. Like special attack energy, this recharges over time. To see how much of your special move energy is used by each scroll, please see the Summoning - Scrolls article.

Note that although many special moves will activate when you click the special move button, some special moves will require you to specify a target (the Bull Rush special moves, for instance).

Familiars and Combat

Many familiars are capable of helping you out in combat by attacking your opponents. Their attacks range from mild irritants, through to assaults capable of delivering massive damage or seriously reducing your enemy’s statistics. Each combat familiar has a specific type of combat that they specialise in, and you will earn experience in that skill (as well as Constitution) as if you had inflicted the damage yourself. Familiars will also help with Slayer assignments and LootShare.

Of course, because your familiar is separate from you, they can only help you to fight in multicombat areas. To see the largest areas where your familiars can fight with you and use their special moves, please read the Summoning - Locations article.

To make the most of your familiars’ special moves, you might like to invest in some headgear, which can store scrolls to be used randomly when your opponents hit you.

If you find yourself facing someone else who has a familiar (in the Duel Arena, for instance), you will find it useful to know that familiars’ attacks are occasionally unlike the usual Melee, Ranged or Magic that you might expect. Most armour has a specific defence value against familiars’ special moves and some of their stranger attacks, and if your Prayer level is high enough you may be able to use the Protect from Summoning prayer to minimise the damage you will receive from their attacks.

Pets

Pet interface The Summoning skill, aside from granting you the ability to call upon strange beings from another realm, also enables you to form close bonds with a number of animals native to RuneScape. These range from dogs and geckos right up to baby dragons!

Pets can be purchased from pet shops, caught using the Hunter skill, received from birds’ nests when Woodcutting, or as drops from some monsters.

If you find yourself in possession of an egg, you will need to use an incubator to make it hatch. You can find an incubator in any of the pet shops. After a short period of time you will be able to go back to the incubator to collect your new pet.

When you have your pet out and following you, you will be able to right-click the Summoning icon next to the minimap and select ‘Follower details’ to see how your pet is getting along.

Like the interface for keeping track of your familiars, there are a couple of useful bits of information available.

The ‘feeding dish’ icon shows your pet’s hunger. The higher the number, the more they need to eat. If you don’t feed your pet regularly enough, they are likely to run away, so remember to keep some snacks on you! You can find out what your pet likes to eat by reading Summoning - Pets.

The other icon, showing an adult bulldog and a bulldog puppy, shows how far your pet is towards being fully grown. Most pets go from being puppies/chicks/etc. to an adult state, but the Guthix raptor, Saradomin owl and Zamorak hawk all have an intermediate stage.

When a person has begun to master the smither’s trade, having risen from working on lowly bronze to more useful metals, there are certain tools that can be used to improve the efficiency of their work, these include:

Gauntlets of Goldsmithing Chosen reward from the Family Crest quest, these will grant the user 56.2 experience when smelting gold instead of 22.5.

Ring of forging With iron, the chance of smelting success is anything from 50% to 80%. Wearing a ring of forging will give you a 100% chance of successfully smelting 140 bars of iron, after which the ring will break.

The Dragonfire Shield

The dragonfire shield is an astounding piece of equipment that enhances the natural abilities of the anti-dragonbreath shield to enable it to absorb and later unleash the power of a dragon’s fiery breath. To make a dragonfire shield you will need a Smithing level of 90.

There are two components to the dragonfire shield: the anti-dragonbreath shield and a draconic visage. Draconic visages are rare drops from adult black, iron, steel, mithril and frost dragons, the King Black Dragon, and skeletal wyverns. To smith them into a dragonfire shield you will need to take them to an anvil along with a hammer. Use the draconic visage on the anvil and you will find yourself in possession of a dragonfire shield and 2000 shiny new Smithing experience.

Note that this may take you some time, so it’s advisable not to click away until you have the dragonfire shield in your inventory.

If you don’t have the Smithing level to make the shield yourself, you can take your anti-dragonbreath shield and draconic visage to Oziach in Edgeville, who will fuse them into a dragonfire shield in exchange for 1,250,000 coins.

Spirit Shields

When you complete Summer’s End you are rewarded with a spirit shield, which can be smithed with some elusive sigils to create even more potent shields. If you have a Prayer level of 90 and a Smithing level of 85, you may well be interested in doing so. Click here to read more about Smithing enhanced spirit shields.

The Godsword

The godsword is a weapon of unimaginable power that was shattered during the last great battle of the god wars. If you descend into the eternal warfare of the God Wars Dungeon you may be lucky enough to find some or all of the three shards of that fabled blade.

The three parts of the blade can be smithed together in any order to reforge the weapon that the gods once fought for control over. This requires a Smithing level of 80, and will grant you 100 experience for joining any two pieces together (so completing the godsword will earn you 200 Smithing experience).

Note that this may take you some time, so it’s advisable not to click away until you have the completed pieces in your inventory.

The final part of the weapon is the hilt. During the god wars, four hilts were designed for the weapon - one dedicated to each of the major gods: Armadyl, Bandos, Saradomin and Zamorak. These hilts can be attached and removed from the blade freely. The only effect the hilts have is that the special attack changes.

Scroll of Efficiency

If you have a Smithing level of 55 and a Dungeoneering level of 55, you may be able to purchase a scroll of efficiency from the rewards trader of Daemonheim. Once the scroll is used, it will disappear, giving you the following permanent effect: whenever you smith an item that requires three or more bars to create, there is a chance that you will retain a bar. This chance is dependent on the bars that you are smithing:

Bronze - 50% chance of retaining a bronze bar
Iron - 25% chance of retaining an iron bar
Steel - 20% chance of retaining a steel bar
Mithril - 10% chance of retaining a mithril bar
Adamant - 8% chance of retaining an adamant bar
Runite - 5% chance of retaining a rune bar

Training Hints and Tips

Remember that you can use the right-click ‘Smelt X’ option, this saves a lot of clicking.

When smelting a large number of ores, use a furnace near a bank, such as Al Kharid. This will save a lot of walking time and will not disrupt your routine too greatly. This method is also useful for Smithing and locations of anvils.

Making and selling steel bars is fast experience and there is good profit to be made. However, making cannonballs brings an even bigger profit, as they are always easily sold.

Once you reach the level to smith mithril and higher, you may be able to buy the bars at a price where you will be able to smith it and sell for a profit, without spending time Mining the ores.

Use the ring of forging (Members Only) to smelt iron ore without failing.

Combine the Smithing skill with Magic and use the superheat item spell, which smelts ore without a furnace.

Smithing experience is ‘per bar’, so items requiring the same amount of bars will yield the same amount of experience.

Summoning Familiars

Using the Summoning skill, you’ll find that there are a few familiars that might be useful for training your Smithing. Of particular note are the beasts of burden, who can carry extra bars or ores for you, letting you train for longer periods before having to head to a bank.

Smithing Training in Dungeoneering

It is possible to train all of your skills while dungeoneering, and Smithing is no exception. Ore is readily available in Daemonheim, and can be smelted and smithed into useful armour or weapons. You can also gain Smithing experience by completing smithing skill doors.
