Combat is the most sought after and important aspect of the game mainly because of its ability to keep you out of danger and is also an easy way to make you money but more of that another time.
Combat levels
Many monster or creatures in Runescape have the ability to attack or be attacked by the opposing side the amount they hit you with is determined by there level and your level.
Combat is made up of different skills you can have a combat level based on your magic, range or strength, attack and defense.
Magic and range is basically long distance attacks either using a bow and arrow, crossbow, throwing knives and spell which also uses runes (well go over in detail later).
With strength, attack and defense they all add up to your total combat level which is indicated by going to the doubled crossed sword and looking down to where it says total combat or alike.
Double cross swords
This shows the total combat level of my character.
As you might’ve noticed already the combat levels of monsters in the game are colored different colors - red, green, yellow or something between any of those three colors.
You will also notice that if a monster is 10 levels below you it is green where as if its 10 higher than you it is red which then means that yellow means it is about or exactly the same level as you.
Green red yellow
Hit points - They are basically the amount of damage you can take before you die. It is accessed by click on the skills button and looking down for a red heart.
Skills tab hit points - You will notice that when you attack something or you get attacked you will see a red or blue splat which represents the amount of damage a enemy hits you for.
Ouch!!!
Once your hit points reach zero you will die and be teleported to lumbridge or falador if you have changed your respawn point (only after doing the quest recruitment drive which is members only) when you die you will keep the items that cost the most but if you die with 1 million coins on you when you die you will only keep 3 coinsL. Moral of the story is… don’t die.
Prepare to attack!!!!!!
Attacking is the main part of combat. Your attack level determines how often you will hit the enemy, what this means is that when your attack level is higher the more times you will hit the enemy you have targeted. Every successful hit you’ll see a red or blue splat appear with a damage amount indicator.
You may also notice that you can’t wield one type of weapon until your level is higher L in order to advance your attack level you must fight in the accurate style by clicking on crossed swords again and then clicking on accurate (only if the weapon allows accurate to be clicked).
Crossed swords
As you can see in my picture that chop on this appears to be accurate I got this up by hovering my mouse over the chop symbol which made the yellow box come up.

My attack is 60 attacks is represented in the skills list by a single sword.
Almighty strength
Strength determines the amount you hit on and enemy the amount you hit them for is shown in splat on the enemy which can be either red or blue. To advance in strength you must fight in aggressive mode which is determined by going to the doubled crossed swords again and also looking for the one that says aggressive and it also may need to be hovered above again.
Doubled crossed swords
On this weapon aggressive appears to be slashed again. In aggressive every time you hit the enemy you will be given 4 exp to strength it may not sound like much but its worth it remember a little adds up to a lot.
My strength appears to be 53 strength is represented in the skills list by a tightly closed fist.
Hold the defense
Defense is a necessity if you don’t want to die quickly or at all. The higher your defense the more of a chance you have to defend or not get dealt damage. To advance in defense you must fight in defensive mode also note: in order to wear different armor you must have a higher defensive level you will get 4 exp for every hit you deal, again, remember that a little adds up to a lot over time.
