Early on as a Runescape Mage or Ranger, you can fight much like you’d fight with a melee character, in being toe-to-toe with your opponent as you fire your spells or arrows into them. Low level NPC opponents don’t hit very hard so this strategy works just fine initially.

But, very soon you’re going to want to upgrade your strategy for fighting as a Mage or Ranger in the online role playing game, Runescape - soon, your opponents will start to beat you rather hard, because you don’t have the armor that a melee fighter does.

So, what are the Runescape tips to avoid being beaten upon by our opponents as we get higher level?

  1. Hide behind stuff, just like my secondary character (a little mismatched in dress) is doing with this lvl 10 Dwarf in the Dwarf Mines.
  2. Find monsters with good drops and good experience who offer you things to hide behind as you attack them.
  3. If you’re a member, scout out your slayer assignment and decide whether Ranger or Mage would work better in this situation or whether you should stick to playing bash-em with your metal armor.
  4. If you’re fighting something that casts magical spells at you, then play Ranger rather than Mage or Fighter. Leathers and dragonhides are more fire-resistant than either of the other two’s armor types.

In closing, I’d like to add that halberds can also be used like a Fighter’s “from a distance”/range weapon, allowing you to wear your highly protective armor while still attacking from afar, hiding behind or beside something your NPC opponent cannot get past. Blue Dragons and Hellhounds are two that come to mind immediately, although these are both member beasts I believe.

Runescape

I find that people who read here are interested in knowing my “credentials” on the game, so I re-post my stats every couple of weeks so y’all can keep up with what’s going on in my skilling life.

Here are my main character’s stats as of November 26, 2005.

The main thing I’m working on right now is Mining and Smithing, working to get to lvl 75 Smithing so I can make Addy arrow tips for my ranging needs. Yum!

I pretty much don’t use farming anymore except to grow herbs and potion secondary-components like Limpwurt roots. I don’t like Runecraft so it sits, low and stagnating as well.

Feel free to leave comments, but note that comments are moderated, meaning if I don’t think your comment is appropriate nor helpful, or I just plain don’t like it, I’ll just reject it and I’ll be the only one who ever saw it.

Note, I really do enjoy some of the feedback I get in this blog. I’ve heard some great stories and received some great tips and tricks that have helped my own playing and enjoyment of the game.

But, unfortunately, my blog also attracts folks of all ages who see me as competition to be battered down into the ground (”I’m better than you, see?” comments), or some kind of financial supplier with a never-ending source of free stuff.

On the one hand, the relentless begging and bashing are strange concepts to me, considering I’m a complete and utter stranger, but on the other hand they’re not strange concepts to me because I notice clearly in life how many humans mistakenly think the world revolves around them and that everyone around them is ultimately present to either serve them or stand in their way.

I used to just delete the comments, but I think I’ll start to post about them instead, because it sounds more fun, and lets me link to other articles in my blog that new readers might not have otherwise come across.

I’ll be nice, because that’s what I am - but I also need practice being blunt, so I will likely do that too.

So, we’ll start with the first one I looked at out of the 909 comments I need to sift through since I haven’t been moderating comments for the past 9 months or so:

QUESTION/COMMENT
Date: November 18, 2006

dude how did u get ur stats so high?! I wuz wonderin if u could give me some money like 500k or sometin.

my user is [no longer included here]

add me and try and give memoney!!!!

ANSWER:

I got my stats high by playing hour upon hour upon hour, wasting time I could have spent socializing with humans face-to-face, working out, cooking healthy meals, or even learning new things and expanding my various Real Life potentials. I also got my stats high by sticking with the same character and rarely playing alternate ones. For example, I have no “pure” PK-based characters at this time.

To optimize my advancement, I tended to log in early in the morning when the population counts were the lowest and work on my high-competition skills like mining during those times.

Becoming a member was a key in my advancement. The world is much much bigger and therefore things you’re trying to gather in any one spot tend to have less competition than in non-member worlds.

As for cash - no, I won’t give you any. You’re a complete stranger, take responsibility, learn how to earn it on your own and stop relying on the world to support you.

There’s lots of great tips in this blog in general, but check out the specific entries about earning money by selling logs, running runes, mining ores, and if you’re a member, running flax.

If you need a job, check out the Runescape Job board and list your profile for free today.

Besides, you’ll get more online girlfriends if you have the bling to support their needs.

The End For This Round

Posted by anson

Well, that’s enough for now. I’m sure there’ll be a lot more fodder for these types of entries, considering the 800 additional comments I haven’t viewed yet.

There are a number of other comments that were left that had questions of substance (ie: great questions, useful tips!), and I’ll be answering those, too, as time allows. If you’ve got a question or some helpful tips for others reading the blog, feel free to leave a comment. I’ll dedicate a full entry to any true, thoughtful, intelligent question.

But note, if you post a self-centered, whiny, begging or outright idiotic comment, you may appear on the next list where I practice calling those types of people out on their behavior.

I know, some people like that. Maybe I won’t give _those people_ attention, because I like to annoy attention-mongers… it’s in my blood.

I will not give you anything for free, and I will not loan you any money. People like me, however, offer jobs to those who don’t mind doing work to get the money or equipment they desire. So, venture over to the Runescape Jobs and Pals board and list your info, or find a buyer there, and YES feel free to ask me for Runescape tips, but NO, DON’T ASK FOR ANY MONEY OR GAME “STUFF” FOR FREE.

In fact, don’t even tell me how broke you are, or how poor you are. I don’t want to hear about it, you’re in the same boat as 95% of the Runescape population.  The other 5% have found some way to feel joy from doing the things that gain big money over time.

Long version of this post:

Free online role playing games are a lot of fun, specifically because there are SO many people to meet and talk to (or attack and kill), as well as so many things to do on the game, and so many places to go…

But they’re also annoying sometimes, because with free online games come a whole bunch of people who can’t afford the registered/members version of the game, and it seems that among these players there are a higher percentage of folks who display Annoying Behavior, and who seemingly don’t realize it’s annoying.

This entry is dedicated to the education of all individuals as to what denotes Annoying Behavior on an Online Role Playing Game.

Mainly it’s this:

BEGGING.

Begging is when you ask for something for free from someone you barely know.

If you’ve spent a few weeks chatting and exchanging Runescape tips and getting to know someone, you might have built up enough good will in the relationship to borrow something, and that’s a different story.

I’m talking about the folks who talk to me for 10 minutes or less and are then asking me “is there anything you have that you don’t want that you could give to me?”, “I got hacked/I died, can I have some money/equipment?” and “wow you must have a lot of money, could I borrow 50k?” or the likes. I’ve even been asked by people if I’d pay REAL money for them to become members!!!

You think there’s no big deal in asking the for a few in-game items for free, but know this: the person you’re asking (ie: me) has probably been asked that question by 10 different people already today, and 10 people yesterday and 10 people the day before…

You’re seen as JUST ANOTHER BEGGAR. Beggars are annoying on the game just like they are in Real Life when you’re walking down the street and 5-10 complete or near-complete strangers come up and ask you for change.

Please don’t beg for handouts from me. I’m perfectly willing to give you a “job” cutting wood or mining ores, and I’ll even pay you in cash or equipment (up to and including mith stuff) so you get what you need, but the quickest way to my Ignore list and permanent non-chat status with me is to beg for handouts (ie: anything you didn’t work for).

Begging just is NOT cool.

And in closing, advertising how broke or poor you are isn’t cool either - it’s begging without even having the guts to ask the direct question of “can I have something from you to relieve my broke or poor situation?”

We now return you to your regularly scheduled blogging, and I apologize to you non-beggars out there for having to read this, although I’m sure you agree wholeheartedly with this post.

Runescape is a very popular online game, and as a result, you may find yourself competing with others both in your battling areas and while you gather raw materials like logs and ores.

Simple strategies to lessen the frustration you’ll feel from this competition are as follows:

  • Become a Member if at all possible - the accessable part of the world is larger and thus there are places to gather your raw materials and build your skills.
  • Find a bank far away from the main cities and gather your materials from that location instead. Many players are too lazy to leave the main cities, so the competition is inherently reduced.
  • Find a time of the day when there are reliably less people playing, and spend that time gathering materials that are the most frustrating with other players around: mining, log gathering and fishing for example.
  • Invest the time in improving your ranging ability (bow and arrow use), because when you’re fighting in competitive areas, quick-clicking rangers have an advantage, and in some areas a ranger can stand out of the reach of a large monster, yet still attack and kill that monster.
  • Make your own arrows - this goes with the above point - if you try to buy enough arrows to improve your ranging ability, you’ll spend all of your money and still not have enough arrows. It’s better to advance your mining, smelting and fletching skills so you can create and use your own arrows. Plus, hey, if you have an extra 1000 laying around after all that work, you can sell it for a profit to others who are too lazy to create their own!
  • Explore the wilderness when the game server isn’t full - there are a lot of great skilling places, like mines and herblore-component things, in the Wilderness. But of course, there are inherent dangers in the Wilderness - other players looking to kill you for sport or for your equipment. Explore when the game server is quiet and you’ll be a lot less stressed.
  • Save every rune you come across - then build your mage skills periodically. Building your mage skills is rewarded by the teleport skills you will get at mid-to-high levels, which make transportation around the world a LOT EASIER, and provides for quick-escape within certain parts of the Wilderness in case you find yourself under attack.
  • Sell law runes 1, 2 or 5 at a time when players are specifically desperate for the runes - don’t sell large quantities at any one time as you won’t get a good rate for them, and law runes are valuable (being a key part of the mage teleports above). If you sell 1, 2 or 5 at a time, you can ask 1000 coins for each and players will pay. Watch for their advertisements in the bank.

VERY Easy Mage Leveling

Posted by anson

MAKE SURE MAGE IS LEVEL 1!!!!!!!!!
An easy way to raise your mage is to first do the Imp Catcher Quest. This can be started by talking to the Wizard in I think the third floor of Wizard Tower. It is the Wizard in the room right next to the one with the Lesser. He will tell you he lost four beads(red white yellow and black, one of each. You can get the beads by killing level 2 Imps. These are very irritating, as they teleport away sometimes when at low health, and sometimes don’t even drop the beads. An easier way, in my opinion, is to buy them from various banks or popular locations(Such as Lumbridge Square and Varrock Square)from other players. Offer about 50-200gp for each bead. I’d recommend saying this,”Glow2:wave2: Buying all colored beads 50-200gp each!!!” It takes a while to type but is effective. If you have quite a bit of money then buy for 1k, you will get them quite fast. After getting all beads talk to the wizard who started you on this quest and he will give you enough mage exp. to put you up to level 9 in mage. You will also get an amulet of accuracy and 1 quest point.

Once done with Imp Catcher Quest do Rune Mysteries Quest. Start this bug talking to the Duke or Kind(I forget which, but one is members only so yo should find out easily enough) ont he second floor in Lumbridge Castle. Further instructions are then given. When finished, mine as much ess as you can handle mining.

Once done, craft air runes(You need an air tally or Tiara, the temple is south west of Faladore. Once you have about 500 airs, get the same amount of minds(You can craft them by now) You need mind tiara or tally, and the temple is east of Goblin Village, right before you enter the Wilderness.

After you have 500 minds and 500 airs, sell them in varrock, either at the rune shop or bank, your choice.(Bank you get mroe money but takes longer to sell usualy)Sell the 500 airs and 500 minds for 10gp each, I’m going to ask you to do the math, sorry.(at the shop you will get 2.5k for the 500 airs and 2.5k for the 500 minds, equaling 5k).

Once you have your money, buy a blue WIZARD robe, not the one you can buy in Varrock Clothing shop, leather vambraces, leather chaps, BLUE wizard hat, any color cape(I think blue looks cooler, it matches) and leather boots, with anti-dragon shield and an air staff, and finaly an Amulet of Magic. Sell the Amulet of Accuracy.

Now craft mind runes again, and get as much as you possible can stand to get, and then craft earth runes(You should be able to now, and with your level 9 mage, that’s the highest you can cast). Rememberm gets as much of those as you can stand to get.

Go to Draynor VILLAGE, not manor(Draynor Village is North West from Wizards Tower) and hide behind the wooden fence that is on either side of the sidewalk path, and cast Earth Strike(Go to where you choose your type of attack and click the option SPELL and select the Green Orb, which is Earth Strike) and attack the jail guards. MAKE SURE YOU ARE HIDDEN BEHIND THE FENCE. I find that if you step back one space you hit more often.

Once you can use Fire Strike craft fire runes(Fire temple is a little south east from the entrance to the mines in Al Kharid) and get as many as you can. Then use Fire Strike until your mage is about 15 on the jail guards.

After go a few steps south east of the jail guards and go behind the big rocks, exactly opposite of the black knight that is always there, and attack him. He will move towards you but can’t get to you.

After this you’re on your own. Good luck Contact me on fight4angel.

Vampire Slayer Quest Guide

Posted by anson

1.Find Morgan in Draynor; its not that hard, it’s a small village. He’ll tell you about the Vampire and that he wants you to kill it. He’ll also tell you to go find his friend Dr. Harlow at the Blue Moon Inn.

2.First, go upstairs and search the wall cupboard for a clove of Garlic. Then go South of Varrock center to the Blue Moon Inn.

3.Talk to Dr. Harlow and get him a beer when he asks for it. He’ll tell you how to beat the Vampire and give you a Stake.

OPTIANAL: If you go upstairs in Morgan’s House open and search the cupboard You will find Garlic when i beat this Quest i was lvl 39 Melle
my friend with garlic beat the quest at lvl 27

4.Get everything you need and go to Draynor Manor. Head to the stairs that go down. Open the coffin and the Count (level 34) should jump out and start attacking you.

5.Attack him until he’s full red bar and the Stake should automatically stab him. If not make sure you have a Hammer with you and the Stake. [If it still doesn’t work try stuff like using Garlic on him and manually stabbing him with the Stake.]

Once he’s dead you have finished the quest (Congratulations).
