The new line of Development Diaries continues today with the release of another diary: Dungeon Maps. Whereas last week’s diary talked about the design of a storyline and its characters, this Dungeon Maps project largely consists of technical challenges. Today’s diary, therefore, focuses on the technical work involved in creating this update.

It takes a long time to get even a simple project from initial concept to release. As we make progress on the projects for which we’ve released diaries, we plan to update the existing diaries to keep you informed of what’s going on, in addition to releasing new diaries about other projects. We’re also planning to have articles from other departments in the future, such as Graphics and QA. So, while the new development diaries are shorter than the old-style ones, they will be released more often.

Posted by amber

A new, localised version of the Windows downloadable client is available.

The Windows downloadable client is a lightweight application designed specifically for RuneScape. It uses less memory and desktop screen space than a conventional browser, and is therefore ideal for low-end machines. The latest version includes the following enhancements:

Language Aware – will choose the correct language region based on your computer’s settings
Better compatibility with low-end machines
Features a smart new icon

You can find a link to the Windows downloadable client in the Downloads & Wallpapers section of the RuneScape website.

Easter 2009

Posted by amber

The Easter Bunny seems to have been around forever. Or has he? What makes him seem immortal? This Easter, calamity has once again befallen his factory, and he needs your help to solve the problem. As well as giving you the chance to fix some impressive machinery, and deal with some colourful (but less than helpful) characters, Splitting Heirs will also give our free players a taste of what it’s like to catch implings.

This event revisits the past, so if you’ve played previous Easter events you’ll recognise the incubator from 2008 and the Easter Bird from 2006. Find out what makes the Easter Bunny tick, and you could also earn yourself a new fun weapon. So what are you waiting for? Go seek out the Easter Bunny!

The layout of the welcome screen has been changed slightly to allow us to add further information to it in the future.

Pyre logs now have a ‘Make-X’, and code for this has been significantly reworked. Also, any bonus experience gains from the All Fired Up quest rewards should now properly apply.

The April Fools’ cabbages have now been removed from the game, and seagulls have been removed from the Hunter skill.

The speed at which your prayers activate should now be back to normal, without the delay some players have been experiencing.

Today, we’ve released a development diary about the upcoming ‘rest’ feature. Given that we’ve already released an…accidental teaser, we thought we’d give you some more insight into the design process for this small but useful feature, which I hope you’ll all end up using.

This week’s update concerns Summoning and hairstyles: better usability, more pets and the return of the fringe.

You have provided us with so many ideas to improve the Summoning skill that we were spoilt for choice, and our wish list of improvements is getting longer and longer, but for now we have decided on the following improvements.

Firstly, we have raised the pet limit so that you can have twice as many pets as before. This seemingly simple change led to a major background change, which will improve the stability of the code so you will experience fewer bugs in future. Secondly, you don’t need to wait until a familiar has disappeared to use the next pouch; now you click a handy button in the Summoning interface to replenish your familiar’s timer to 100% when it has dropped below two and a half minutes. So, if you use beasts of burden to help carry things around, you can now use this button to keep them going, as long as you have another pouch of the same type in your inventory. Additionally, we have made it much more straightforward to trade in your pouches and scrolls with Bogrog, the ogre in Gu’Tanoth.

We often receive comments about and suggestions for new hairstyles from players on the forums. In particular, we read players’ complaints that there was once a female hairstyle with a fringe that got removed. We searched and searched, but could not find any indication that this was ever the case, so we scratched our heads for a while…and then created one! Enjoy your fringes, and perhaps you might like to pay a visit to Party Pete to try out a special new hairstyle designed for partying.

Lilies of the valley have also blossomed around RuneScape. These fragrant spring flowers will stay until the next game update to celebrate the start of May.

Last but not least, we would like to point you towards a new link in the quest journals. The QuestHelp system is now accessible directly from your quest journal, and you don’t even need to log into the website to access either a hint or a spoiler for a quest.

As you’ll notice, this set of updates isn’t as large as you might have hoped, for which we apologise. A project we were hoping to release this week was found to have bugs, and so has been delayed until next week. While we’re aware that these are relatively small fixes, we hope that you’ll appreciate them nonetheless.

Free player forum access

Posted by amber

Today, we have opened up the forums for high level free players to be able to post!

All free players who have earned over 12.5 million XP (that roughly equates to someone having all F2P skills on level 72) are now able to post. Exciting times!

There could be around 250,000 new forum users to add to the current active forum users, and over the coming weeks and months, we will gradually enable more high level free players to have access.

If you’re a member currently, and already have access to post on the forums, we’d appreciate it if you could give our new forum guests a warm welcome.

If you’re new to the forums, have a read of the Forum Code of Conduct and please check the Forum Specific Rules on the forums you want to post on. There’s also a welcome thread in the Recent Updates forum – check it out.

Enjoy!

New Dwarf Quest: Diary 2

Posted by amber

We’ve released the second entry in the development diary for the new dwarf quest. This one deals with how the project went from the initial blank page to the first definite plan.

We’ll be releasing a new entry in this development diary every few weeks or so, as well as releasing diaries about other projects. Rather than just offering a snapshot like the old-style development diaries, the new diaries will be shorter but updated more frequently, so they can take you through the process of development as it happens.

Turbo here from the RS Economist blog. Some of you have noticed my stories doubled up, and yes that is the case. Any guest posting I do, I do copy to my own blog as well. I don’t post all of my stories here, so if you did like what you read, then add the RS Economist blog to your RSS.

One style of blogging I have always enjoyed was the top 10 list. If this one is popular, I am actually thinking about a monthly top 10 list series, so after reading it leave a comment and let me know what you though.

While digging through information on rings for the previous post, I found a ton of info on the magical properties of some of the other rings around RS, and at the same time found no definitive list of the various rings that you could wear. In the old days it was pretty easy. You had the 4 basic rings, Saph - Diamond and Dragon Stone, and depending on what you were doing at the time you pretty much didn’t have much choice. Enough with the nostalgia, on with the list:

10. Beacon Ring - This ring is from the What Lies Below quest, and is freely replacable from Zaff in his Varrok Staff shop. With a decent bonus and a low replacement cost this one eeks in as #10.

Bonus: +2 Magic att, +1 Magic Def

9. Ring of Stone - Yes, I know. This ring is pretty useless, but hey! It turns you into a rock. How cool is that?

Bonus: You get to be a rock!

8. Pineapple Ring - Yes, you can’t wear this one, but it is a tasty treat that not only heals, but looks cool when dropped on the ground.

Bonus: Heals 2

7. Lunar Ring - This is the cheap man’s Seer ring. With a replacement cost of 2,000gp, it is also very expendable.

Bonus: +2 Magic Att and Def.

6. Ring of Fire - The coolest thing about this ring is the examine message, “It burns, burns, burns…”. To get one you need 62 FM, and complete All Fired Up.

Bonus: +2% FM xp.

5. Ring of Charos - Although this ring has no stat bonus, it is extremely useful. There is a long list of places you can use the ring to get something special, Just make sure it has been activated.

Bonus: Too many to list, google it

4. Archers Ring - This one makes the list, but only as the least of the great Fremennik Rings. It has pretty bad cost performance, but as the only ring that offers a range bonus it ranks as a 4. I am sure if rangers stopped killing mages, you might get more enchanted rings.

Bonus: +4 Range Att and Def

3. Warrior Ring - The weaker of the 2 combat rings, this one is far more cost effective, at about 1/10 the cost of its more desirable brother. Well worth the investment if you like to carry a scimitar.

Bonus: +4 Slash Att, +4 Slash Def

2. Berserker Ring - A ring reputed to bring out a berserk fury in its wearer. What to do the highest possible damage in the game? This ring is for you.

Bonus: +4 Strength, +4 Crush Def

1. Seers Ring - You regulars know my penchant for all things magic related, so this one shouldn’t come as a surprise. Down from it’s price in the millions, this ring is a must for the fighting mage.

Bonus: +4 Magic Att and Def

Honorable Mention

Ring of Wealth - The original expensive ring. This stayed at 100k for months, and I remember when I purchased my first one, thinking that it would be my ticket to riches. What a rude awakening that was.

Ring of Slaying - The teles are convenient, but it is the name that gets this one into the honorable mention. “Ring of Slaying”, yep, still like the sound of that.

Ring of Visibility - Pretty useless in and of itself, but you need one to get the ghostly robes, one of the best free items in the game.

And that rounds out my list. How was it?
