You know that feeling, starting a new game. In most games, you start out with a tutorial which learns you the basics of the game. Okay, check, Runescape has that. After you’ve done that you can start with “the real deal”, the actual game. This is when you usually need help to learn everything, but somehow Runescape fails at this crucial part. Probably the reason why they introduced all those new helpers in Lumbridge not too long ago, and also many other things…arr
When I started, I remember that I was stuck in Lumbridge. At that point I had no idea that it actually was Lumbridge, but that’s besides the point. I tried
asking people for help, I could get them to tell me where I was, but no one would actually take me out there. They would just ignore me, like they did to basically anyone. I thought it was just something normal for games. I later found out that it was pretty much an element of the game, arrogance. In order to be succesful you have to be arrogant, apperantly. You can’t be social, you have to use all the time you get, time is money! Can’t help other players, there’s no time for that, and what’s the point anyway, helping others? What do you get out of it?

It’s always been like that on RS, or at least it was like that when I started playing, and as far as I can tell it still is now. It’s hard to pinpoint for me, I don’t play anymore, but I’ve logged on a lower level account to see reactions of people when you just say hi, but in general you don’t get a reaction. It gets worse when you ask people for some help or just a general game question, such as where to get the kind of gloves they have, or what armor they have. Of course you can’t judge everyone of what a few people do and say, but I think you can still count a whole lot of the Runescape players to be arrogant, too. But why? It’s something which is hard to pinpoint.

At some point I thought the same way. I don’t know how it happened, I guess it’s something you get with higher levels? Arrogance. It comes with age for most people, but in my opinion, you see it in the “younger” people who don’t have a social life, and so they aren’t used to the normal world. To define younger, people in the age of 12-15. They are used to the internet, it’s safe there, you could easily threaten to kill someone, it’s safe. A bit of an extreme example, but the point is, you feel safer than you would in real life. So you can easily ignore and be rude to people, because there are no “real” consequences. No one cares if you do, and because you don’t see a real person, there’s no morale factor either, you’ll find insulting people an easier thing to do than in real life. It’s an isolated enviroment, which isn’t moderated by parents or guardians. You can say RS has player moderators, but they really don’t do that much. The warning system on RS is a joke, and even if you find yourself in the rare event of meeting a player mod, it’s higly unlikely that you’ll actually be doing something which is “reportable”. If you do get reported, there’s only a small chance they’ll look at the report, and if they do you might be unlucky and get a black mark or 2, but you can have so many that it’s safe to be a bully.

I think Runescape would be a much more enjoyable game if people would be nicer, Jagex should start with the introduction of in-game clans or guilds. This usually really boosts the social activity in a game, instead of those teamwork minigames. Jagex should realize that that just doesn’t work for their game, or at least, not yet. They should try making the game interesting for older people, the game being aimed at younger people doesn’t help for the social standard. Maybe if they see how nice it is to have friends and to help other people, be nice to them, they’ll do the same. Friends can help you when you need it, but some people just don’t see that everyone they meet is a potential friend. The next time someone ask you for help, try to realize, he or she is also a real person like you and me. He is also sitting behind a computer and playing the same game, of which you might have more knowledge. If people ask you directions in real life, you help them too, right, why not do it when you’re playing a game?

Level 1-35
Level 1 is the starting point for all great woodcutters. At this level, you can cut normal and evergreen trees. Members can use the regular logs they obtain from such trees, to fletch arrow shafts. A good spot to train for non-members is by draynor manor with the forest of dead trees. At level 15, you can chop oak trees. However, these can be a little slow, so if you stay around the same general area of Draynor woods, you can interchange between regular trees and oaks. At level 25, you should now be able to chop oaks fast enough; continue chopping in the forest just east of Draynor. At level 30, you can chop willows, but continue with oaks until around level 35 - allowing you to chop willows faster. Members should consider training in McGrubor’s Woods, as it is not crowded and the trees are more spread out.

Level 36-60
From level 36, you should be able to chop willows fast enough. For Free players, the best place to chop and bank your willows is Draynor Village, just south of the bank. For Members, you can go past the willows outside the Barbarian Assault mini game, as there are eight willow trees, accompanied by a deposit box just inside the mini game. Willow logs can be a very good money-maker for lower levels, making up to 25k per hour. Other good spots include South of Rimmington, West of Port Sarim, East of Port Sarim, and beside the Champions’ Guild. Unfortunately these spots are second-rate, due to the fact that there are no nearby banks. However, if you are dropping or burning your logs as you go, these places are never crowded, so are far better than Draynor. For members, there are also large amounts of willow trees located by the Lady of the Lake, in Taverley. Once again, there is no bank handy for banking logs, so this spot is better for people burning or dropping their logs.
Members can also cut maple trees at level 45. Maples don’t give quite as good experience as willows, but if you are cutting for money, fletching or firemaking, then these will give a bonus over willows in that they give more experience when fletched or burned, and sell for more. Members can make use of the massive maple tree plantation north of Seers Village, or the smaller grove just above the Seers’ Village Bank. There are also several trees scattered elsewhere around Seers’ Village, if you don’t mind running around a bit. Barbarian Outpost has four willow trees, and a deposit box for banking them. They are quiet, but the lack of a proper bank may put some people off.
Free players: Willows are the best experience for free players, even at higher levels.

Members: You can continue with willows past level until yews or you can swap over to Maple Trees, in Seers Village, and outside Sinclair Mansion. If you are only chopping for Woodcutting experience, willows give the best experience until, like Free players, you can chop yews quickly. Use a Games Necklace to quickly teleport to the Barbarian Assault mini game.

Level 60-75
At level 60, you can now chop yew trees. Trying to do so at this level, though, is utterly pointless. The only reason you would even bother is if you are after money; however, yew logs only make around 30k-45k an hour at level 60, so it’s really not worth it. There are four locations where free players can chop yews easily. These four free world locations are Edgeville, North of Varrock Castle, South of Falador and North-East of Rimmington (this image is not detailed below) as detailed in the image below. These are also less-crowded, but more out-of-the-way locations; North-East of Port Sarim, East of Draynor Village, East of Varrock, and in Lumbridge Churchyard.

Members have a few more options for chopping yews, namely the very popular grove of trees at Catherby, and the three churchyard trees in Seers’ Village, as shown in the image below. There are some other less-crowded spots as well, including several Yew trees in the Tree Gnome Stronghold and Zanaris, as well as a large number in the Piscatoris hunting area.

Perhaps one of the better options, Yew trees are present in the Gnome Stronghold, underneath the central bank. There are a total of 3 Yew trees; on top of that, there is a Farming spot where Trees may be planted. With a Farming level of 60, a player may plant a Yew tree at this spot, allowing them to chop 4 Yew trees. The main advantage is that it is extremely close to a bank; the bank is literally on top of the trees.

After completing the quest Rocking Out, you can use your locker in Rimmington to deposit the yew logs you cut.Free players: If you are only after money, you can begin chopping yews. Otherwise, stick with willows if you are after experience. At level 70, woodcutting yews picks up a bit, although not enough to outrun willows in the experience per hour department.

Members: Once again, if you are only after money, you can start chopping yews now. However, it’s advisable to continue to train on willows, or maples, until at least level 75, which is the earliest time where you can chop yews easily. A good place to cut willows or maples is north of the Seers bank or outside the Barbarian Outpost.

Level 76-99
You are an expert at woodcutting at this point. You can chop every log in the game, and you can do it well. You should know the best places to chop whatever it is you are after, but we’ll cover some good magic tree locations all-the-same.
At level 75, members can chop magic trees. However, if you are after experience, stay with willows. Even at level 80, magic trees are very slow. The magic tree areas are often crowded, so you also have to put up with that if you decide to chop magic trees for money. You would be better off chopping yews until at least level 85 before you begin trying to chop magic trees. The best places to cut magic trees are south-west of Lletya, south-west of Seers Village (near the Rangers’ Guild), outside Thormac the Sorcerer’s Tower, and at the Mage training area.

Free players: The best trees free players can chop are yews, and the best locations for yews are outlined in the previous section.

Members: Stick with yews until at least level 85, which is the earliest chopping magic trees becomes a speedy option. Even then they are not ‘fast’ though. Until 85, yew trees will deliver some decent money, and willows will give you the best experience.

A lot of players are also cutting willow logs for very fast experience, yet the profit isn’t that high. While cutting willows, you can get bird nests faster and you can sell the seeds, or either plant them yourself. To get more money, crush your bird nests and sell them to herblorists. The best place is now next to Barbarian Assault, as the deposit box is really close to the trees.

Treasure Trails

Posted by runescapecoin

I personally have done well over 150 Treasure Trails in my RuneScape time, and the best reward I have received would be a Zamorak/Saradomin Rune Plate. During the course of those 150+ clues, I have gone through some of the weirdest and hardest clue combinations and I have obviously received nothing for my work.

I have gone through a clue combination consisting of 3 Saradomin Mages and then a Zamorak Mage followed by a puzzle box, receiving next to nothing for my work. I just finished a clue this evening consisting of 2 puzzle boxes, 2 emote clues, 2 Saradomin Mages and several anagram/speak to/riddle clues. My reward for a half hour to 45 minutes of work? 14 Lobsters, a pair of Black D’hide Chaps, a Magic Shortbow and some Nature Runes.

What solutions could be implemented to fix this frustrating problem? There are several possible ways to fix the issue:

Solution #1 - Tie specific clues to specific rewards. This is probably the worst solution, seeing as the goal of Treasure Trails is to be random. To implement this system would mean if you got a clue you could check what you would get and decide based on that whether to do the clue or not. Prices would become screwed up as a result of the excess/scarcity of certain items, which Jagex certainly doesn’t want.

Solution #2 - Eliminate Treasure Trails. Instead, give monsters that previously dropped Treasure Trails level appropriate drops. Level 3 clue droppers would instead drop Level 3 rewards. Again the issue with solution, as with solution #1, is that people would kill only the monsters that gave the best rewards, causing prices to fluctuate.

Solution #3 - Leave it. People get rich all the time, and the economy stays balanced out. Self-explanatory, but I’m obviously not in favor of this solution. Jagex probably is however, seeing as it requires the least bit of work on their part to keep the system running.

Solution #4 - A complete overhaul of the system. Change the way the clues work, add new levels of rewards (because honestly, Ranger Boots should not be a level 2 clue), and change the difficulty level in each level and lessen the amounts of monsters that drop clues. That way the rarest items would be the hardest to obtain, and the more common items would be easier to obtain. Obviously there would be some price fluctuation, but overall it would be minimal compared to the any other solution besides #3.

Now, is it likely that solutions #1, 2, and 4 will happen? Probably not. As I stated in Solution #3, Jagex seems happy with doing the least amount of work to keep the (flawed) system running, and what Jagex wants goes. If we’re lucky something will change, but hell, thats how Treasure Trails work, and we all know how that has worked out for me.

Beyond the Runecrafting Guild, this update brings you a few small things that should make your lives easier…

Kazgar, Mistag and Dartog have been given right-click options so you can quickly ask them to guide you through the Lumbridge Swamp Caves. Elkoy, the guide from the Tree Gnome Village maze, has been given a similar option.

When you previously right-clicked on a chat message from another player, you were always offered the option to ‘Add friend’ and ‘Add ignore’. If that player was already on your Friends list, those options weren’t very useful, so we’ve replaced them with a new ‘Message’ option. This is identical to what would happen if you clicked on your friend in your Friends List. (This is not available on Quick Chat-only worlds.)

Tai Bwo Wannai village welcomes its newest arrival, Imiago. If you’ve completed Jungle Potion, he’ll be willing to protect your calquat trees from disease in exchange for eight poison ivy berries.

The gardeners who protect bush patches have always demanded payment to look after poison ivy bushes. It’s been pointed out on the Forums that poison ivy bushes never get diseased anyway, so the gardeners no longer offer to look after them.

Ever since a brave adventurer rediscovered Runecrafting, mages from the Wizards’ Tower have been working hard to figure out its intricacies. In fact, so many have been drawn to Runecrafting’s secrets that a guild has formed.

Not everything is rosy and happy in the guild. An argument has raged over the magical reaction that creates rune stones: are green or yellow orbs more important in the process? Agree to resolve their conflict and you’ll find yourself in our newest minigame, The Great Orb Project!

The purpose of this team-based minigame is very simple: collect more coloured orbs than the opposing team. Watch out, though, as they will be pushing your orbs out of the way to stop you winning. This frenetic minigame offers few rules and a great alternative to conventional Runecrafting - all with a range of rewards, of course. Expect rune essence, Runecrafting XP and new magical equipment if you wipe the floor with your opponents.

The Runecrafting Guild also offers a number of features that are not tied to the minigame. The rune altar map helpfully shows the location of all altars; one mad wizard has learned how to repair abyssal pouches; and the head of the guild is working on a marvellous omni-talisman that combines the powers of all existing talismans into one.

Note that the guild is available to both free players and members - the Runecrafters want all the help they can get!

FunOrb - Dungeon Assault

Posted by anson

Set your traps and ready your raiders - Dungeon Assault roars onto FunOrb filled with dungeon trawling mayhem. Take on the role of a dragon, sleeping on your hoard of gold while your minions enact your will. Your team of raiders can be sent out to plunder the dungeons of other dragons, while you fill your own dungeon with as many traps, guardians and monsters as possible in order to thwart your rivals’ raiders.

Dungeon Assault is our first persistent-world strategy game. While you’re offline, your dungeon is still available to be raided by other players. When you’re online, you get to send your raiders out to steal gold from the dungeons of other dragons. The more successful you are in raiding other dungeons, the more Treasure and Renown you accrue. Treasure is used to hire raiders and build dungeon rooms; Renown is a measure of how well respected you are by other dragons. Members will gain access to more powerful raiders and rooms, and the highly prized Orbs of Mastery…

Dungeon Assault is perfect for the gamer who wants a short, sharp burst of intense gameplay. Drop into the game every day to see how your dungeon fares: despair over how many of your rivals have raided you, revel in how many rival dragons you have scared off and plan revenge raids against your enemies to regain your Renown.

The most frequent request we have received over the last few months has been to put more PvP back into the game. We want to let you know that this request hasn’t gone unheard, and that we’ve put a lot of research into how we can introduce new PvP mechanisms. The aim is for PvP content that better replaces the old Wilderness, but without reintroducing RWT.

Hopefully, you’re already aware of the imminent Clan Wars release (see the September Behind the Scenes in a couple of weeks for more information), but there are also plans afoot for the most exciting and “old school” PvP update we have ever considered – unique PvP worlds.

As many of our long term players know, in the old RuneScape Classic days you could actually fight players just outside the gates of Lumbridge, before the days of duelling and even before the days of the old Wilderness itself. Players could hunt each other down, chasing them away from favourite resource points and generally “owning” large areas of the map.

So, in 2008, we will be bringing you special ‘PvP worlds’, where you can fight other players almost anywhere! In addition to all the usual content you might expect to find in RuneScape, they will also include:

  • Optional sign-up – choose between PvP danger or stick to ordinary play by simply switching worlds.
  • High danger with items dropped on death.
  • High rewards for kills. To avoid any RWT issues the reward for a successful PK will be generated by the game, similar to when you kill a monster at the moment. We’re creating generous drop tables based on factors like your levels and the impressiveness of the kill.
  • These drop tables will include “PvP world specific” items like XP-modifying gear, lvl 70+ equipment and new, glorious, short-term but hard hitting gear. These will once again make PKing a viable source of income.
  • PvP across 99% of the world, including the old Wilderness.
  • Attack any player within a certain level of your own. Level range depends on the area, similar to the old Wilderness levels.
  • …And all sorts of other twists on interesting content… Just think of the possibilities when you can PK anywhere!

Naturally, we also have other PvP-orientated content, like Stealing Creation (a resource control game where skillers and PKers work together, creating equipment and beating up the opposition) and Mobilising Armies (a real-time strategy game where you use your hard made bows, swords, etc. to equip your own armies in 4-player battles).

Add all this to a healthy schedule of quests (featuring Arrav and the sequel to Spirit of Summer), holiday events and some unique puzzle content… and the rest of ‘08 has something for almost everyone.

Finally, we’d like to let you in on a little secret – we’re currently working on our highest level, longest, most exciting quest ever. Not necessarily for launch in ‘08 (it’s not something we want to rush, after all), it’s already had more development time than the entirety of “Recipe for Disaster”… but you’ll have to wait to find out more. We’re adding secret hints and references all the time about this one, so if you need to know more, just look around! Leave no stone unturned….

In other news…

Beyond the Runecrafting Guild, this update brings you a few small things that should make your lives easier…

Kazgar, Mistag and Dartog have been given right-click options so you can quickly ask them to guide you through the Lumbridge Swamp Caves. Elkoy, the guide from the Tree Gnome Village maze, has been given a similar option.

When you previously right-clicked on a chat message from another player, you were always offered the option to ‘Add friend’ and ‘Add ignore’.

We’ve also fixed the following bugs:

Treasure Trail sliding puzzle boxes were getting stuck, making them impossible to complete.
The roof of the Grand Exchange was failing to disappear correctly when you stood underneath it. Similar bugs were affecting the front of Varrock Palace and bits of the Warriors Guild.
The Amulet of Catspeak was incorrectly positioned on female characters.
The Amulet of Fury was not rendering correctly with the Bandos chestplate on male characters.
If you wore a blue snelm, your chathead was appearing yellow.
The 3D models for skillcapes were using too many polygons, resulting in bizarre graphical glitches. They have now been remodelled to resolve this problem; their appearance is largely unchanged, but you may notice some slight changes.
Mud pies were positioned incorrectly when you wielded them.
Flared trousers were rendering incorrectly with most boots.
The ‘fine shirt’ base kit had a glitch affecting the neck area on male characters.
The mind tiara was missing part of its model.
Baba Yaga’s hair was clipping through her hat.
The progress hats from the Mage Training Arena were not rendering correctly with players’ hair.
Radimus Erkle, master of the Legends’ Guild, had a rendering problem with his cape.
The obsidian cape was rendering incorrectly with certain tops.
Bogrog was checking for the wrong Summoning level when players tried to exchange praying mantis pouches for shards.
Trimmed chaps and Wilderness capes were rendering incorrectly on female characters.
The mime mask and zombie mask items were displaying incorrectly during dialogue.
Players could walk through a rope barrier in the Varrock Museum.

Talk to Unferth in Burthrope and you will find out his cat named Bob has gone missing. Agree to help him find him and Unferth will ask you to talk to his friend Hild who lives nearby him who can also help look for Bob. Make sure you have your cat/kitten and amulet of catspeak on at all times.

Head a bit north of Unferth’s house and you will find Hild’s house. Talk to her and she will tell you that theres a chance you can find Bob if your amulet of catspeak gets enchanted and to do it you will need to give her 5 death runes. The amulet is simple to use, just keep turning the arrows clockwise or anti-clockwise until the whole thing flashes then go to the direction where the arrow is pointing. Bob can be anywhere in RuneScape so just keep following that and check up every so often. For me, Bob was in a building in Draynor.

Talk to Bob when you find him and he will tell you about his love for a cat at Menaphos and his long lost family. And after that conversation your cat/kitten will ask you to go ask Gertrude about Bob’s history.

Go to Gertrudes house west of Varrock and talk to her.At the end of the conversation you will be told by Gertrude to ask Reldo about Robert the Strong. Now head to the varrock castle and talk to Reldo, he will tell you about a legend of a man named Robert the Strong who your cat/kitten believes is either Bob or a person who knew Bob. After the story go back to Bob.

Talk to Bob back in Burthorpe and he will tell you that he has no memory of anything to do with Robert the Strong. Then your cat/kitten suggests that you talk to the Sphinx in Sophanem who might help out Bob.

Head all the way to Sophanem and talk to the Sphinx and ask her for help on how to prove Bob was Robert the Strong, you will enter a 5 min 40 sec cutscene or you can always skip it and read a summary, either way at the end Bob will tell you to look after Unferth and gives you a list of chores you have to do.
